Pannonhalmi Főapátság Arborétum és Gyógynövénykert
Location data:
The monks living in Pannonhalma have been involved in medicine and the cultivation of medicinal herbs since the foundation of the Archabbey in 996, when the first garden was established. The current Arboretum was conceived by the Benedictine monk Fábián Szeder, who, starting in 1830, created a so-called English garden in accordance with the customs of the time. Today, more than 30 types of medicinal plants are grown in the 11-hectare garden. The outstanding value of the Arboretum, which also has an area of the same size, is its collection of species and varieties from the five continents of our Earth. The Arboretum was declared a nature conservation area in 1963, and in 1996, together with the buildings of the Pannonhalma Archabbey and the Medicinal Plant Garden, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
