Every mum is likely to be happy with a big bouquet of flowers, but if you want to make this Mother’s Day really special, give the gift of quality time this time. Here are five super programmes to brighten up the first Sunday in May.

1. Admire the splendour of the blooming rhododendrons!

The Jeli arboretum, near Kám in Vas County, is a rhododendron flowering area that attracts many visitors. In May, the rhododendron is not only breathtakingly colourful, but also has a wonderful scent in the arboretum. Walking through the wall of flowers and plants at this time is the experience of a lifetime. The Mother’s Day you spend here will surely be remembered for a long time.

2. Go on an adventure among the gastronomic treasures of the Lake Balaton Highlands!

It’s true that a single day is not enough, but it can be a special gift to time one of your spring visits to Lake Balaton for Mother’s Day. If you are a gourmet, you will probably be delighted by the range of gastronomic options that await you. A good start to the day, for example, is breakfast at the ‘Búzalelke’ (Soul of wheat) bakery. The bakery in Kisapáti is famous for its award-winning semi-brown bread, which is leavened also with Rhineland Riesling must (unfermented grape juice). In addition to the nostalgic setting, the pastries are tempting, as well, so those with a sweet tooth can grab a delicious cocoa snail.

If you’d rather focus on lunch, then the Kővirág in köveskáli is the place to be. In the restaurant with its romantic atmosphere and old furniture, you can enjoy a real culinary adventure, accompanied by excellent Balaton wines.

If you are looking for a truly nostalgic experience, visit the Közért Bar. Formerly a co-operative shop and pub, the building now houses a pop-up gallery and bar, as well as accommodation in the rear of the building. Take a seat in front of the giant Delicacies (Csemege) sign and reminisce about your childhood while admiring the artwork on display. In fact, you can buy any of them, even furniture.

For true tranquillity, enjoy the May sunset with a special Italian Riesling on the Csobánc Hill. Admiring the panoramic view of the beautiful wine region, for example from the terrace of the Villa Tolnay wine house, is the perfect opportunity for deep conversations.

3. Relax in the favourite medical bath of Lujza Blaha!

The Árpád Spa in Székesfehérvár is a real curiosity. History comes alive within its 110-year-old walls. From the Turkish bath, you can enjoy the beauty of the restored dome, but you can also admire the carved lion head sculptures in the horseshoe pool. And of course, you shouldn’t miss out on the adventure area either: a whirlpool, sauna world, massage and salt room will ensure that your body and soul are refreshed. If the best gift for your mum this year is relaxation, this could be the perfect activity on Mother’s Day.

4. Create together!

Creating together is becoming more and more popular, as it’s a great fun activity that you can really enjoy. Whether it’s a flower arranging workshop, pottery, bag sewing or experiential painting, there is now a wealth of opportunities for craft lovers in many parts of the country. Don’t let the fact that you’re not renowned for your manual dexterity stop you from making a success of the programme with guided workshops. Of course, there is also a good chance of a good laugh. If more people take part, it can be an even better family activity to create together and give your mum a lasting experience.

5. Discover the city of sunshine!

The pearl of Southern Hungary, Szeged can be a great inland destination if you want to surprise your mother with a trip. Strolling around the city centre, you can not only admire the stunning buildings, but also enjoy the bustling shopping scene of Kárász Street. Take your time exploring the charming cobbled streets, admire the REÖK Palace (Regional Art Center) and, while you are there, grab a delicious pastry at the artisan bakery at the base of the palace. Of course, the cathedral, the Tisza riverbank and the Ferenc Móra Museum are also recommended attractions. A day in the city of sunshine is likely to brighten up this Mother’s Day!
