Riding along the panoramic embankment of Lake Tisza, you can indulge in several passions at once: you can immerse yourself in the beauty of the peaceful water and the swaying reeds, then you can get revved up at the exciting sights, and then cool off contentedly on the beaches.
Riding along the panoramic embankment of Lake Tisza, you can indulge in several passions at once: you can immerse yourself in the beauty of the peaceful water and the swaying reeds, then you can get revved up at the exciting sights, and then cool off contentedly on the beaches.

Lake Tisza is one of the most attractive and safest cycling destinations in Hungary, anyone can experience the peace of the romantic water world and floodplain forests by cycling along its shores. New sights, beautified beaches, trendy bars and restaurants tempt you to stay. Cyclists are allowed on the beaches, so you can also refresh yourself at the bars, but you usually have to buy a ticket to splash around. There is hardly any car traffic on the embankment, and there is no elevation gain, so you can safely embark on the adventure with children.

You can rent bicycles in many locations, including Abádszalók, Sarud, Poroszló, and Tiszaderzs. In Tiszafüred, you can even get additional equipment at the Lake Tisza Bicycle Centre, and the Reformed Visitor Centre, which opened in June, offers thematic routes in addition to bicycles for exploring the Reformed sights of the area.

Tip: From Budapest, you can take the Lake Tisza express train (with nearly 50 bicycle spaces) directly to Poroszló and Tiszafüred. Abádszalók and Kisköre can be reached on the Kál-Kápolna–Kisújszállás line.

Lake Tisza circle

The cycle path hugging the southern basin has been completed with the completion of the section connecting Poroszló and Tiszafüred with four spectacular bridges, which was chosen as the Cycle Path of the Year in 2021. It is practical to start the 65-kilometre circle (Tiszafüred–Tiszaderzs–Abádszalók–Kisköre–Dinnyéshát–Sarud–Poroszló–Tiszafüred) from Tiszafüred or Poroszló. At Kisköre, stop for a longer rest and see the Fish Ladder, or climb up to the Lábasház lookout.

Variations on a small boat for cyclists

Since spring, small boats for cyclists have been crossing the lake between Tiszaderzs and Dinnyéshát, and you can plan various excursions with them.

The 23-kilometre circle starts from Abádszalók towards Tiszaderzs, and after the half-hour boat ride, it returns to Abádszalók, passing through Kisköre.

The 41-kilometre tour goes from Tiszafüred to Tiszaderzs, and after the boat ride, it shows the water experiences of Poroszló.

The 44-kilometre northern circuit is also enjoyable with mountain bikes. The route runs on gravel from Poroszló to Tiszadorogma, followed by a crossing on the tiny ferry (if it is on the other side, just shout), then runs back on asphalt, touching the bridges.

You can cycle 95 kilometres if you combine the Lake Tisza circuit with the northern circuit.

Water experiences for young and old

After cycling, you can splash around on the renovated open-water beaches. For families with small children, we recommend the shallow water section of Poroszló, the free beach in Tiszafüred also has a fitness park and sports field, and in Sarud, children can have fun on the huge water playground and trampoline park.

Beaches around the lake:

Dinnyéshát – Álompart Beach

Kisköre – Ring-a-tó Beach

Abádszalók – Tisza-tó Beach

Sarud – KalandPart Adventure Beach

Poroszló – Tisza-tavi Beach
