The classics of Szilvásvárad: trout, narrow-gauge railway, and the magic of Fátyol (Veil) Waterfall

How to get to Szilvásvárad – stress-free version
Szilvásvárad can be reached by direct bus from Budapest, which is a huge plus in itself. It is easily accessible by car from the M3 motorway, and everything you want to see in the town is within walking distance. The entrance to the
Szalajka Valley
is well developed, with a ticket office, restaurants, and a variety of programmes.
Without trout, there is no Szilvásvárad
This is not a recommendation, but a basic rule. Trout has a long tradition in Szilvásvárad! It is freshly prepared in several places in the valley, but if you want a truly authentic experience, head to the Sáfrány trout smoking house! Smoked trout is a simple but delicious dish, and here it is exactly as it should be: crispy, juicy, and “forest-compatible”.
An added bonus is that
Sáfrány Pisztrángudvar (Sáfrány Trout Farm)
is located in the valley, so you don’t have to go far for a delicious meal.
Szalajka Valley: where walking is a great programme
The Szalajka Valley is a place where every pace is acceptable. There’s no need for a hiking plan or sports watch: we can walk comfortably along the stream, stop to take photos every few meters, or simply sit down on a bench and listen to the water. Exploring the valley is a very pleasant experience. On the way, we pass the Szalajka Valley Wildlife Park, where we can see the forest’s inhabitants up close, the Forestry Museum, which dazzles us in a pleasant way, and, of course, the legendary waterfall, which we arrive at as if it were an old friend.
Fátyol Waterfall and Gloriett Glade – the classic highlight
It is no coincidence that the Fátyol (Veil) Waterfall is the icon of Szilvásvárad: the sight of water running down the limestone steps is always different. Sometimes it is more pronounced, sometimes more subdued, but that is precisely what makes it so interesting. There is something reassuringly unpredictable about it. It is an experience even if we just walk past it, and even more so if we stop and watch it for a longer time. From here, it is worth continuing on to Gloriett Glade, where the landscape suddenly opens up. Here, we don’t push ourselves, count our steps, or watch the time – we just are, look around, and enjoy the view of the Bükk Mountains.
Narrow-gauge railway: yes, even as an adult
The Szalajka Valley Forest Railway is not just a program for children, and this can be stated with complete confidence. If we get tired from walking, or simply want to see the valley from a different perspective, the narrow-gauge railway is the perfect solution. We sit, look around, and let the landscape come to us. Slow, a little nostalgic, and just touristy enough to remain lovable. What’s more, you don’t have to travel the entire distance: you can hop on for part of the journey and then walk back, so the narrow-gauge railway complements rather than replaces the valley experience. As an adult, this is no longer childish, but rather a conscious,
comfortable solution.
Additional programs, if we still have time: Istállós-kői Cave
For those who have more days to spare, Szilvásvárad still has plenty to offer. The Istállós-kői cave tour is a more serious undertaking:
with steeper sections,
longer walks, and the satisfying feeling that we have spent the day in a meaningful way. The nature trails in the area show Bükk Mountains from a new perspective, whether in terms of natural values or simply well-placed rest stops.
The adventure park
in the valley is ideal for families and children, but this just goes to show how diverse Szilvásvárad is: everyone can find something to suit their needs here, whether it’s an active hike or a more leisurely break.
Why do we love Szilvásvárad?
Because everything we need is here: forests, water, good food, a little exercise, zero stress – and it all comes together naturally. In Szilvásvárad, there is no need to rush from one program to another or collect countless experiences. It is an enjoyable place even if we just take a walk in the valley, and even if we eat a trout and let time pass. Szilvásvárad is a destination we visit not only to tick off another place we’ve been to, but also
because we want to return there.
