For many people, Esztergom is synonymous with the Basilica, but the town is much more than that: small courtyards, quiet little streets, wine tasting on the banks of the Danube – all characteristic features of the town. You can spend a whole weekend here, at the gateway to the Danube Bend.

What exactly will it be about?

-Weekend on the Danube

-Danube Bend

-Weekend trip

Esztergom is not only worth visiting for the Basilica. Although the monumental church dominating the landscape of the town is indeed the first thing that comes to mind, this town on the banks of the Danube has much more to offer in terms of experiences and sights. If you visit the town known as the "Hungarian Rome" for a day or a weekend, it is worth planning your itinerary so that you have time to explore the lesser-known places as well as the major attractions.

Let the day begin!

It is worth starting the morning with a good coffee at the Pacificaffé Beans & More, which opened on Vörösmarty Street as the first speciality café in Esztergom. Here you can order not only black espresso or milk-based drinks, but also special, award-winning varieties made from roasted coffee beans, such as filter or batch brew. Several of the café's own roasted coffees have received international recognition at the Great Taste Awards, which is a quality assessment similar to the Michelin level in the world of gastronomic products.

Sightseeing

A short walk takes you to the Esztergom Basilica, one of the largest churches in Europe. The Basilica is not only impressive from the outside: inside, it is worth visiting the panorama room, the crypt, and the treasury, where a wealth of ecclesiastical art treasures can be seen. Passing through the Dark Gate behind the Basilica, you can explore the Water Town. There are several churches in this part of the town, and you can discover its history while walking along the banks of the Danube.

Gastronomic recharge

If you want to take a break from walking, you can enjoy a light lunch at Isler Bakery, Bistro & Kitchen. In addition to a varied lunch menu, you will also find pastries and desserts here. The dishes are based on seasonal ingredients, and the place is characterized by refined flavours and a light, urban atmosphere.

In the evening, if you are looking for a truly special gastronomic experience, it is worth booking a table in advance at 42 Restaurant, which, with its Michelin star, reinforces Esztergom's international reputation. Fine dining here is not an end in itself, but is based on the ingredients and history of the region, making it a worthy conclusion to a meaningful day or weekend in Esztergom.

Historical walk

In the afternoon, you can continue your historical walk, complemented by visits to museums. In the Castle Museum and the Danube Museum, you can not only better understand the sacred past of the place, but also the relationship between the Danube and the town. If you have more time, you can also enjoy the proximity of water on Palatinus Lake, located a little further from the centre of the town, especially on warm days.

Winding down

If you spend a whole weekend here, you can start the second day at one of the viewpoints on St. Thomas Hill, from where you can admire the beauty of the Danube Bend. It is also worth exploring the natural walking trails of Vaskapu Hill or Búbánat Valley if you are longing for nature outside the town. Another nearby attraction is Párkány, which can be reached via the Mária Valéria Bridge, from where you can admire the historical panorama of Esztergom from a different perspective.
