You don't need a serious hydrographic map to get a sense of the impact of water on the entire landscape when you wander around Békés County. A marshy landscape until river channelling in the 19th century is a true water paradise today: anglers, beachgoers, paddlers and those who like the atmosphere of the urban built riversides, will find what they are looking for.

A marshy landscape until river channelling in the 19th century is a true water paradise today: anglers, beachgoers, paddlers and those who like the atmosphere of the urban built riversides, will find what they are looking for.

Let's splash!

On a warm spring day, the thought of going for a swim is a tempting one. It's a great idea to visit Gyula at this time of year, where you don't have to be terrified of the weather forecast. Because you can have fun on rainy or sunny days in Gyula Castle Bath. The world-famous spa, which opened in the late 1950s, actually dates back many centuries. The thermal pools with their special brownish-yellowish water are ideal for those who want to heal, the adventure pools for families and groups of friends, and the outdoor swimming pools for swimming enthusiasts. Once you've been here, there's no need to prove it: a whole day here is not enough to try everything. By the time you get to everything from the hot tub to the diving pool, from the wave pool to the domed wellness pool, the time has flown by.

Tips: It is advisable to bring a comfortable bathrobe with you, as you will need to walk a lot in the huge spa complex, between the adventure areas!

Even those who don't consider rafting to be the most attractive sport should take on the water in the Körös region. Thanks to decades of regulatory work, the Körös are now peaceful, slow-moving rivers, so you can explore them safely and at your own pace. But even that doesn't guarantee that you'll get away dry on a SUP board, which you can practice in the area, for example in Gyomaendrőd. One of the most popular water sports in recent years is no easy feat. Fortunately, the Csicsergő Water Tour station - right at the foot of one of the Körös-bridges - gives you the boost you need for your water adventures. Besides to renting a SUP or boat, you can also camp, relax or sign up for a guided canoe trip.

Tips: You can rent a SUP elsewhere in the area, for example, Szarvas or Békés.

With dry feet

It's a good idea to try another type of watercraft when you are here! In Békéscsaba in the Csaba-park, you can rent a pedalo on the boat pond or the Living Water Canal. Originally used to float timber harvested in the Apuseni Mountains in Transylvania), the Living Water Canal, which was partly natural and partly artificially created in the late 1700s, has virtually no navigation. But exploring it in a canoe or kayak is a lifetime experience! The Tour inform Gyula launched water tours from the Snail Garden in the city centre a few years ago, offering perhaps the most unique perspective of the historic spa town. Visitors are introduced to the city by guides who are enthusiastic dwellers and it is pleasure to listen to them! The tours of different lengths will bring the old town to life, but also Gyula sausage, the Castle Baths or the 1566 town siege, and even the cultural values of the area. And, of course, in addition to the exciting content, the spectacle is captivating!

Tips: Occasionally, you can sign up for a combined nine-kilometre hike, where you can swap your paddle for a bike handlebar on a part of the tour.

Still, on the water, but with a nice lemonade in your hand, you can enjoy the beauty of the area. There are several places along the Körös River where you can take a cruise, for example in Szarvas, where cruises run scheduled between April and the end of October, and even a sunset-viewing edition in summer! Near Gyula, uniquely in Szanazug we can try the swamp cruising.

Tips: Whichever mode of transport you choose, binoculars will come in handy! The wildlife of the Körös region offers surprises at almost every metre of your cruise: In Szarvas you can see two hundred-year-old oak trees, lots of waterfowl in the backwaters and even beavers along the coast!
