The best spots are already welcoming guests with open arms at this time of year, but there are no crowds or sweltering heat yet to make exploring, booking tables, or finding lodging a hassle. Cycling is a real treat this time of year, too. Here are 5 routes based on recommendations from the experts at BalatonBike365!

Nature-filled adventures in the Balaton Uplands, for families

Travel time: 2 hours 20 minutes

Length: 23.7 km

Route: Balatonfüred, Balatonszőlős, Pécsely, Aszófő, Diós

Away from the hustle and bustle of the lakeshore, this wonderful Balaton loop offers tranquility, rich wildlife, and geological treasures. Our route, which follows a bike path almost the entire way, begins in the old town of Balatonfüred. After passing the Koczor Winery and Guesthouse, we take a paved road to the Villa Vitae private estate. From there, we head toward Gella Hill, then ride through the vineyards to reach Pécsely. We’ll return to Balatonfüred along the Balaton Bike Trail, where we can wrap up our adventure with some sightseeing. If you’re in Balatonfüred, be sure to visit the BalatonBike365 Port North Cycling Center, where they’re ready to assist cyclists with everything! Here, everything from bike rentals and accessories to information and guided tours is available.

Road cycling for regular riders

Ride time: 3 hours

Distance: 61.9 km

Route: Balatonfüred, Aszófő, Pécsely, Balatonszőlős, Tótvázsony, Nemesvámos, Veszprém, Felsőörs, Lovas, Paloznak, Csopak, Balatonfüred

From Balatonfüred, we take the bike path to Aszófő, where a beautiful panorama unfolds before us for several kilometres. After passing through the town, we ride along a smooth, low-traffic country road, and soon we begin the most challenging section of the tour, which climbs for no less than four kilometres. At the end of the climb, a bike path in excellent condition offers some relief. Next comes Nemesvámos, after which we roll into Veszprém, still riding on the bike path. From here, we turn toward Szentkirályszabadja, then connect to the road branching off from Route 73 toward Felsőörs. Our next stop is Lovas, from where the Római út leads all the way back to Balatonfüred.

Hello Hungary dining tip: Don’t rush home from Balatonfüred just yet, as this is the town on the shores of Lake Balaton with the most MICHELIN-recommended restaurants. Among others, you’ll find the Zelna Wine Bar and Vinotheque here, as well as Bistro Sparhelt, a standout in modern Hungarian cuisine. And if you’re craving even more culinary experiences, take the train to Badacsony, where you can immerse yourself in the sparkling spring atmosphere of Lake Balaton! In the center of Badacsonytomaj, you’ll find the Hotel Bonvino Wine & Spa, where you can relax after enjoying excellent local wines and authentic Balaton Uplands snacks. It’s worth signing up for a wine tasting and browsing the local events! In addition to Bonvino, it’s worth stopping by Neptun Badacsony and Tilia Wine Restaurant, where the menu—primarily Hungarian but occasionally inspired by Asian, Scandinavian, or North African flavours—changes seasonally, yet always pairs perfectly with the region’s wines. You can also book a room at the hotel to rest up before returning to Füred, the starting point of your bike tour.

A climb up Hideg-hegy with culinary delights

Ride time: 2 hours 20 minutes

Distance: 23.5 km

Route: Pécsely, Barnag, Vászoly, Balatonudvari, Örvényes, Aszófő

If you’d rather tackle a more challenging loop (or take on the Balaton Uplands on an e-bike), then choose the Hideg-hegy summit tour! Hop on your bike at the cyclist-friendly Huszár Restaurant in Örvényes, then set your virtual compass toward Vászoly! If you’re big cheese fans, fill your bags with products from the Vászoly Cheese Factory, then keep pedalling toward Hideg-hegy! Soon you’ll reach one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the Balaton Uplands, where it’s also worth taking a break. From here, Zádor Castle is just a stone’s throw away, and from there it’s just a short ride to Pécsely. A beautiful wooded area leads to Aszófő, from where we follow the Balaton Bike Trail back to the starting point.

Adventure Tour Between Szántód and Ságvár

Ride time: 4 hours

Distance: 35 km

Route: Balatonföldvár, Szántód, Szántódpuszta, Jabapuszta, Töreki, Balatonszéplak, Zamárdi

This medium-distance loop takes you through the varied landscapes of Lake Balaton’s southern shore in the Balatonföldvár and Zamárdi area. Due to the nearly 500-meter elevation gain, it is recommended for experienced cyclists or those riding e-bikes; in return, lookout points, open-air museums, and pilgrimage sites alternate along the route. We’ll ride on various surfaces, including short dirt road sections—be careful on these after rain, as well as at the crossings with Route 7. Water stations are scarce, so make sure to start with a full water bottle and tackle the tour in dry weather!

Recommended accommodation: Mövenpick Balaland Resort Lake Balaton

If you’re traveling with family and would like to relax a bit after your active adventures, the Mövenpick Balaland Resort Lake Balaton in Szántód is an excellent choice. This five-star, family-friendly hotel is located right on the waterfront, where you can relax in spacious, playful rooms inspired by Jules Verne’s adventure novel *Around the World in Eighty Days* – you might even run into Willy Fog himself!

The complex includes BalaLand FamilyPark, located right next to the hotel: if you still have energy left at the end of the day – or perhaps the next day – set off on an exciting journey around the world! In this approximately 10,000-square-meter adventure realm, you can take a train ride around Europe, travel by airship, or even “visit” London and Egypt. The park also features an impressive water area with adventure pools, a unique slide complex, and an outdoor water playground. The Szántód adventure park can be an excellent starting or ending point for a family bike ride.
