Five charming forest lodges where a majestic basket breakfast awaits you

You can wake up to the atmosphere of the Balaton Highlands in one of the Istvándy Guesthouses, where everything is about undisturbed time spent together. The three houses stand at a respectful distance from each other on the edge of the gray cattle pasture, while numbers four and five are hidden in the forest – where squirrels and deer are not uncommon visitors. The panorama opens up to Lake Balaton and the surrounding hills, and the sunset can be enjoyed from the private, covered jacuzzi or the Finnish sauna.

In the morning, a “basket of abundance” arrives at the house: fresh pastries, homemade jams, local cheeses, delicacies made from our own Mangalica pork, and other items that are enough for a second, leisurely meal. The guesthouses can only be booked for two people, so peace and privacy are guaranteed.

Pagony780, a mid-century modern treasure, is tucked away in a quiet resort area in the Upper Mátra Mountains. Built in the 1980s but renovated, the house opened its doors at the end of 2024. Upon entering, we find a well-equipped kitchen, living room, and dining room, with a bathroom and two separate bedrooms with washbasins upstairs. The accommodation is a real treat for fans of mid-century style: the furnishings are distinctive yet lighthearted. In the eclectic interior, modern furniture harmonizes well with mid-century tubular frame pieces.

The terrace, where you will also find a heated tub, is an excellent place to enjoy starry evenings. You can order a basket of local produce from BAKET Mátra: the packages are available in savory and sweet flavors, as well as in a gluten-free version.

Hidden among the trees on the southern slopes of the Börzsöny Mountains, high above the Danube Bend, lies the Tiny Heart Cabin mini-empire. The modern, uniquely designed cottage has a spacious wooden terrace offering breathtaking views of Visegrád Castle and the winding Danube. The feeling of complete isolation is broken only by the sound of birdsong and the noise of the forest. The small forest cabin features a two-person Finnish panoramic sauna, an outdoor hot tub, and a fireplace – all in a truly wild and romantic setting. The network-independent design gives the cabin a special atmosphere, while we don’t lack anything – there is electricity and internet!

Every morning, a “sunrise basket” filled with produce from local smallholders awaits you at your cabin door, fresh and abundant – so that you arrive in the Danube Bend not only in body but also in spirit.

If you want to leave the noise of the city behind, Bakonyi Porta is an excellent choice. Nestled in Olaszfalu, in the embrace of the picturesque Bakony Mountains, this guesthouse is recommended for those who love vintage style: the interior of this cottage, which can accommodate four people, is a place where time automatically slows down. There is a jacuzzi and outdoor seating area on the property, and we can fire up the grill upon request. Here, bathing under the starry sky or leisurely evening barbecuing is a true “off-grid” experience.
