Farmers’ markets in the eastern part of the country
Kata Kincső Bárdos
- farmers’ markets

Market shopping has many advantages over shopping in stores. On the one hand, we can always buy fresh, seasonal produce, and on the other hand, we can support local farmers at farmers’ markets. Then there is environmental awareness: there are far fewer processed, packaged goods in the markets, and the supply chain is much shorter when we buy directly from the producer.
Furthermore, shopping at markets can now be considered a program. Nowadays, primary producers and artisans are present at markets, often alongside second-hand dealers and antique dealers. It feels good to get lost in a market like this, spending hours browsing among the trinkets, and then taking home some fresh delicacies for the table. Last but not least, it can also become a community program: we can meet our neighbors here or strike up a conversation with the vendors. Human connections can elevate anything to a higher level.
Tócoskerti Market in Debrecen
The Tócoskerti market in Debrecen is a well-organized market embedded in a residential area, which primarily serves the daily shopping needs of local residents. The stands feature vegetables, fruits, baked goods, and dairy products, often sourced from smaller farms. Shopping can easily be combined with a walk in the nearby residential areas or a longer trip to Nagyerdő (Debrecen Great Forest), making shopping a natural part of a city break.
Mixed market of Hajdúszoboszló
Both locals and visitors frequent the spa town’s market, which is particularly busy in summer. In addition to basic foodstuffs, processed products are also on display at the booths. After shopping, it may be a good idea to take a dip in the Hajdúszoboszló Thermal Bath, but it is also worth checking out the gastronomic offerings of the area.
Farmers’ and Craftsmen’s Market in Hajdúböszörmény
This market operates in a small courtyard in the center of Hajdúböszörmény, where the emphasis is on seasonal offerings and personal presence. Since the market is located in the city center, after shopping it is worth exploring the nearby Bocskai Square and its surroundings, but visiting the Bocskai Thermal Bath can also be a pleasant activity if you have more time.
Sóstói Market of Nyíregyháza
This market operates in the summer next to the charming Blaha Lujza promenade, where local producers and creators offer their wares in the afternoon hours from Wednesday to Sunday. The market offers syrups, cheeses, honeys, fresh vegetables and fruits, as well as industrial and folk art objects, providing a great opportunity to get to know the flavours and craft traditions of the region in a lakeside setting. The fair, which has been running for several years now, provides a space for local farmers and creative artists to connect directly with shoppers, further enriching the experience of visiting the Sóstó area.
Outlook
In addition to permanent farmers’ markets, there are also occasional themed fairs and non-traditional markets. Debreceni Szatyor, for example, is a community initiative, a basket community that has been operating for more than ten years. Szatyor has several locations and is open several times a week, so Debrecen residents can choose the one closest to their home for their shopping. Debrecen, being a large city, often organizes children’s clothing exchanges and family fairs, which are also excellent, environmentally conscious solutions for families with small children.
The markets in the eastern part of the country are a good example of how shopping can be an experience: a leisurely morning, chatting at the stalls, then exploring a nearby attraction can all make for a perfect weekend.
