A close-to-nature excursion at Kis-Balaton

One of the most exciting attractions at Kis-Balaton, accessible even without a tour guide, is Kányavári Island, which is worth exploring with friends, family, or as a couple. This easily accessible yet exciting destination can be reached by crossing the iconic wooden bridge – —there is a spacious parking lot in front of the bridge. It’s worth taking a stroll along the charming, 1.5-kilometer Búbos Vöcsök (‘Great Crested Grebe’) nature trail, which winds through reed beds, birdwatching spots, and meadows. Its stations showcase the rich birdlife, and along the way, you’ll also find several playgrounds and a lookout tower.

If you have time, it’s worth visiting the interactive exhibition at the nearby Kis-Balaton Visitor Center, or stopping by the Fenyvespuszta Petting Zoo, located across from Kányavári Island, where more than 150 friendly animals live. With advance booking, you can also take a carriage ride.

Wine, music, Kis-Balaton!

On the western side of Kis-Balaton, on Öreghegy in Zalaszabar, you’ll find the Kányaváry Winery, one of the region’s premier culinary destinations. In the summer, you can sample the winery’s premium wines on the panoramic terrace or in the garden, accompanied by wine snacks. You can visit the Kányaváry Wine Terrace & Wine Bar by appointment or opt for a full-day program.

If you are planning a multi-day getaway, you can also book accommodations on the estate. The Kányaváry Villa comfortably accommodates up to 4 people, while the 8-room Wine Guesthouse and the 7-room Guesthouse are ideal choices for larger groups. If you’re staying on the estate, be sure to try the panoramic sauna in the renovated wellness area or sign up for a sauna program while the kids play.

Alcoholic and non-alcoholic, from Gen X to Gen Z

At the Kányaváry Wine Terrace & Wine Bar – even as part of a tasting – you can sample special selections that are also available for purchase on-site. As part of the program, items from the GEN Z line of next-generation wine cocktails, designed for younger generations, are also available.

“GEN Z isn’t just about taste or alcohol content; it’s about atmosphere, identity, connection, and stories that can be experienced and shared”

– says Zoltán Szabadics Jr., the operations manager at Kányaváry Winery. The lineup features a pair of wine- and gin-based cocktails: the Ciao Bella and the Ciao Bello, which are best enjoyed with lemon, ice, and tonic. The former has notes of rosehip and mango, while the latter features jackfruit and rose flavours. The concept draws inspiration from the Italian way of life: the lightness of summer, the slower pace, and moments shared together.

The estate also caters to middle-aged and older guests, as well as those who do not consume alcohol: the non-alcoholic wine, imaginatively named Szesztelen, offers a light, fresh alternative.

The programs alone make a visit to Zalaszabar worthwhile

It is especially worth visiting the region during the estate’s own festival, Bor.Zene.Zala. During the event, which will be expanded to three days from July 16–18, 2026, visitors can participate in wine tastings, culinary programs, and concerts on Öreghegy (Old Hill). The lineup also includes craft workshops and a variety of musical performances, ensuring there’s something for every age group. The authentic Zala atmosphere is created by the sense of community, casual conversations, and local wines; together, these elements make for a complete getaway in the Kis-Balaton area!
