We tried it: bivouacing on Galyatető!
Mészégető Marcsi
It is extreme to start sleeping in bivouacs when you have never been particularly attracted to such experiences. However, in April 2016, when the Galyatető Lookout was awarded the Audience Prize in one of the most prestigious international architecture and design competitions, the Architizer A Awards, one becomes involuntarily tempted to get a sleeping bag and some thick blankets to try what it is like to greet the dawn at one of the highest points in the country.
Dreamy views, unforgettable night
The view of the Mátra Mountains from the recently renovated lookout on the route of the National Blue Trail is truly breathtaking. In good weather, even the capital can be seen from 964 metres above sea level, but of course, who would want to look out over the city from such a peaceful setting? On arrival, we headed to the Galyatető Tourist Centre to get the keys to our accommodation. The chalet has a real alpine atmosphere, a very pleasant place where tired hikers can buy warm food and drinks at the Galya Bistro. A special feature of the centre is that those looking for more comfort can choose between super rooms, boot cabins and an apartment house. We stuck to the plan, as we couldn’t wait to unpack in the bivouac and look out from the roof!
A total of three bivouacs were established in the tower. In the puritanical apartments hidden behind giant metal doors, the only reminder of civilisation is lightning-fast WiFi and a lamp. We put our sleeping bag on a mattress and the mattress on a wooden floor, which was as hard as sleeping on concrete. At first glance, it looked like an adventurous place to lie down, but we had no idea what excitement the night would bring. In fact, the bivouac is much colder than one expects. On colder nights, it would have been worth packing two blankets and a sleeping bag, as well as a complete duvet and, of course, a comfortable pillow. Although we slept little, and not in the greatest comfort, the view in the morning and the all-encompassing peace made up for it. Serving hot tea with sugar and breakfast has never tasted so good! I could almost feel my fingers melting. All in all, bivouacing is one of the most fun things to do, and absolutely unmissable for anyone who likes to spend time in nature.
The light filtering through the stained glass windows in the tower walls, the constant breeze on the roof and the thin layer of mist creeping over the canopy of the trees make for a truly memorable morning wake-up.
What to take with you?
If you are in the mood for a trip, remember that the air cools down at night. Choose a sleeping bag according to the temperature and the time of year, and on colder days make sure you have a few blankets and underwear. You will be especially grateful for the latter when you have to “jump” out to the toilet a few hundred metres away in the middle of the night. So don’t skimp on warm clothes and blankets, even if the weather is nice during the day! A pillow for comfort, and a thermos with a hot drink in it for the cold!
What to see in the area?
Galyatető is located on the route of the National Blue Trail, so it is a good idea to frame this special night with a long hike. And if you want to relax, choose one of the super wellness hotels in the area!
