Around Lake Tisza by bike: rest stops, gastronomic spots, and hidden beaches

The Lake Tisza loop is not a classic bike route. It is more the kind of route where you stop every twenty minutes because you notice a nature trail, a beach, or a fisherman's inn. The approximately 66-67-kilometre route around the lake is moderately difficult, well-marked, mostly flat, and can be completed in about three and a half hours – if you do not let Lake Tisza constantly "distract" you. We do let it. In fact, we deliberately seek out those rest stops, gastronomic spots, and less popular beaches that make this tour not a sporting achievement but a true summer experience. Abádszalók, Poroszló, Tiszafüred, footbridges over the water, fish ladders, bike-friendly stops. Doesn't this lake seem like a great place?

Things to know before you set off

The total length of Lake Tisza loop is 66-67 kilometres, which can be cycled in about 3-3.5 hours at an average speed – if you plan to do it without any stops. We do not. The bike path is well-developed and mostly flat, so the tour is moderately difficult and does not require any special fitness level. There is no need to chase performance: this route is also enjoyable for those who like to stop, look around, take pictures, or just dangle their feet over the water.

How to get there

  • By train: From Budapest's Keleti railway station, with a change in Füzesabony, you can reach the lake in just over 2 hours. You can also take your bike on the Tisza Lake express train. From Poroszló, the Eco-Centre and the bike path are about 1.5 km away.
  • By car: It takes about an hour and a half to reach Poroszló on the M3 motorway. You can park in several settlements, so you can start your trip from any point.

Poroszló: nature trails and moments above the water

You have to slow down near the Tisza Lake Water Promenade and nature trail. The path leads over the reeds on planks, with water below us and birdsong all around us – here, we do not have to rush anywhere. The Lake Tisza fish ladder is also a place where you stop for a minute... then for ten. This is the section where you realize that Lake Tisza is not "just" a beach, but

a live nature film.

Tiszafüred: beach, relaxation, urban vibe

In Tiszafüred, you can find a particularly good beach. It is civilized, green, and easily accessible from the bike path. If you are planning a longer stop, this is the ideal place to get off your bike for a dip. The Lake Tisza cycling centre is a good meeting point where you can recharge your batteries and adjust your bike if necessary.

Abádszalók: the Siófok of Lake Tisza

It is no coincidence that Abádszalók has been given this unofficial title. It is a lively place, a little louder and a little more of a party atmosphere. It is home to one of the most famous beaches on Lake Tisza, Lake Tisza Beach, and it is worth buying a ticket if you want a little adrenaline rush during your cycling day.

Gastronomic stops that are worth parking your bike for

One of the biggest dilemmas when cycling around the lake is where to stop for food first, because there are tempting options at almost every turn. Fortunately, there are places where it is not just worth stopping because you are hungry, but because you can really enjoy your time there.

The

Fehér Amúr Halászcsárda,

for example, is a sure bet on the Tisza Lake circuit. It is a classic fisherman's inn with a no-frills menu. It has everything you could want to eat in the middle of a day of cycling: fish soup, fried fish, carp, catfish.

The Aranyosidombi Udvarház

is the ideal choice when you are no longer counting the kilometres and are ready to take a break. It is a cosy, peaceful place, just what you are looking for in the second half of your tour around the lake.

The Stég Büfé

in Abádszalók is an excellent choice, if you want a quick, beachy, summer stop.

Hidden beaches, smaller stops

One of the biggest advantages of Lake Tisza is that it does not have just one beach. There are several smaller, less crowded stretches of bank suitable for swimming along the way. These are not always marked with large signs, but they are noticeable. If you see a ramp, it is worth giving in to the temptation.

Why do we love this route so much?

Because it is a very well-planned, bike- and cyclist-friendly summer route where you can enjoy nature, go to the beach, eat well – and that is enough to make you feel in harmony with yourself.
