Summer fun by the water
Koppánymonostor
One of the most beautiful, yet surprisingly unknown sections of the Danube is located at Koppánymonostor, near Komárom. The wide beach and calm currents of Koppánymonostor make it ideal for swimming. The greenery on the opposite bank, the slowly passing boats and the spacious area really give you the feeling of being on a river holiday rather than on the outskirts of a city. As it is a well-developed beach, there are showers, baby changing facilities, bicycle storage, and during the season, there is also a lifeguard service, so you can try out water sports.
Szentendre, Postás Beach
Closer to Budapest, but with a small-town, friendly atmosphere, is the Postás Beach in Szentendre. This is one of the best-known and most reliable free beaches on the Danube in the area, characterized by a well-maintained shore, gradually deepening water, and shaded areas.
It is ideal for families, but also for those who want to combine a city trip with an afternoon swim. The center of Szentendre is just a few minutes’ walk away, therefore a day at the beach can easily be combined with dinner or an evening stroll along the Danube promenade.
Göd
Also located near the capital is the free beach in Göd, which has long been a favourite among locals. The long, grassy shore and large trees are perfect for a classic summer afternoon. In keeping with the relaxed atmosphere, it’s worth bringing a blanket, a book, and cold drinks, and just enjoying the proximity of the Danube. An added bonus is that it is easily accessible from the capital by train and bus.
Kisoroszi, Sziget-csúcs
Sziget-csúcs (‘Tip of the Island’) in Kisoroszi is a beautiful natural formation that provides a unique bathing spot on the Danube. Here, the shore gradually deepens, the water temperature easily reaches the perfect range for paddling and swimming, and in the background, the curves of the Danube Bay, the green shores, and the quiet current provide a summer atmosphere that is lacking in built-up beaches.
Verőce
The Danube shore at Verőce is a bit like being in a small port town. Along the shore there are benches, trees, small jetties, and a “no rush” atmosphere that we rarely experience on weekdays.
Dunabogdány
The water gradually deepens, there are plenty of trees to shelter from the sun, and the curve of the river creates a place where swimming is both peaceful and liberating. The beach has a family-friendly atmosphere, and the trees along the shore cast long shadows in the sunshine, making it easy to spend whole afternoons in the water, walking with your pants rolled up or just lying on a blanket. The landscape is quite special with the Danube Bend in the background.
Zebegény
Zebegény is worth a trip in itself, and there is nothing better than ending our tour with a relaxing dip in the water. There isn’t much shade on the tiny beach, but there are changing rooms and free sun loungers. A magical atmosphere awaits us at any time of day, but the early evening offers the most beautiful light: you can expect long, pinkish sunsets.
