Coffee brewed in a pot, blend or matcha latte? Great speciality cafés, nationwide
Hype&Hyper
agárúr | Szeged
The City of Sunshine has seen an increasing number of small yet charming breakfast bars and cafés popping up in recent years, one of which, the agárúr, is a real gem. The unique ambience of the place combines the style of art cafés and trendy brunchers, while a wide range of coffee specialities shine in the spotlight, with a tempting selection of daily specials with special roasts.
In addition to speciality coffees, the gastronomic offer also includes artisan cakes and Lápastó fruit juices. It is a new wave place to work, relax, or just enjoy the paintings. An important aim of agárúr is to provide a space for local artists to express themselves, so they often organise art exhibitions where, as the name of the café suggests, our four-legged pets can join us.
Scruton Pelso | Révfülöp
Whether you are tired, happy, healthy or sad, Scruton Pelso always has an answer, and it’s home-roasted coffee. Scruton is already well known in the capital, where it offers its services in several locations, and recently it has added a new member on the shores of Lake Balaton, in Révfülöp.
The black coffee is brewed from Brazilian coffee processed in the Impresso roasting factory in Nagytarcsa, but you can also taste espresso tonic. Just like specialty cafés, you can drink your latte with rice and almond milk, or even in a lactose-free version. If you need something else to quench your thirst, there are local wines and elderflower, lavender, cucumber-lime, strawberry-lemonade or classic lemonades. In addition to thirst quenchers, they also serve à la carte dishes, and on weekends, they serve classic Hungarian dishes prepared in the oven and in the kettle.
Sub Rosa Café | Miskolc
In the heart of Miskolc, near the National Theatre, on the site of the former Képcsarnok (Gallery Hall), a cultural and gastronomic meeting place has been created that evokes the atmosphere of the art deco cafés of the last century, in a modern guise. The two committed founders aim to create a high quality place that will attract the public from Miskolc, Hungary and abroad, and will also contribute to the city’s tourist attractiveness.
In addition to coffee, the Sub Rosa Café’s repertoire includes freshly pressed juices and alcoholic drinks, with a strong emphasis on Hungarian wines, sparkling wines, pálinka and gins. Among the wines from the Bükk wine region, the Sub Rosé from the Gallay Artisanal Cellar, specially dedicated to the café, stands out. Also worth mentioning is Tokaj Gin, which has won three international awards and is very popular with café guests. For a post-theatre culinary experience, the Sub Rosa Café is a must, but it is also worth a visit if you are coming to the Steel City for something completely different.
Kútház újhullámos kávékortyoló (‘Well House New-wave Coffee Sipper’)| Gödöllő
Speciality coffees, turmeric and beetroot lattes, and a variety of delicious home-made salty snack cakes are available in Gödöllő’s most unusual café, the Kútház. The tiny hexagonal building is home to a family-run business where everyone can find a treat to suit their taste in the form of artisan desserts, pastries or coffee. The Kútház manufactory is more than just a trendy café: it is an artisanal gastronomic space, a creative space, a local monument and, perhaps most importantly, a place with a soul.
The building has been converted from an old well house, before which it was a boutique and a florist’s shop for decades. It was given its final glorious form a few years ago, when the GUBAHÁMORI architectural studio used every last square metre to create the café. At Kútház, most everything from carrot cake to ceramics is homemade, and the highlights are coffee specialities made in their own roasting plant.
Balmora Factory | Szombathely
Balmora Factory stands out from its competitors in terms of interior design: a clean, slightly brutalist taste mixed with natural materials and a cosy atmosphere. In addition to comfort, we can’t complain from a culinary point of view either, as this café is not only one of the pride of the city centre, but also a high quality specialty café following the latest trends.
Balmora does not ignore the sweet tooth of its guests either, with a special selection of cakes made by the owner. And from a “black” point of view, in keeping with the new wave ethos, it thinks locally.
