Accommodation

A hideaway–cozy–close-to-nature cottage where doing nothing is the most fun!

  • Méhész Zsuzsa
In the Danube bend, charming little cottages for rent are popping up all the time. Perhaps one of the few positive effects of the coronavirus is that more and more of us are looking for recreation within our own borders. It is enough to break away from the usual and engage in a completely different activity in a different environment. You don’t even have to go that far, just head for the nearby forests and mountains. Where we used to go on trips can now become our home for several days. Promising complete silence, wonderful panoramic views and peaceful tranquillity in a pampering environment. Just like many others, Anikó Paór and Viktória Ordódy dreamed of such a cottage – and they have made their dream come true.

Those who know Anikó Paór know that she is always up to something. For 16 years, the Rosinante Inn on Szentendre Island has been the subject to her ideas, of which she is the sales manager. The life of the graduate of the Department of Tourism at the János Kodolányi University is defined by the buzz, hospitality and inspiration. She never loses her impetus, designing a vegetable garden for the inn, working out the details of weddings, providing luxury glamping tents, and all the while she is involved in the organisation of the Stylish Rural Dining and Stylish Rural Hotels’ Association events. She loves to travel, but also keeps an open mind on her adventures, receptively to new things. She has backpacked in remote areas, and has adventured in India, Southeast Asia and other countries: in Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Cuba, Georgia.

As a tourism professional, how are your criteria different when looking for a new destination or accommodation? Aren’t you too critical?

My answer is both yes and no. I’m not looking for luxury, I usually travel as a backpacker. I almost never go to a hotel. What am I looking for? Something that is exciting, beautiful, special, unique, personal – and that conveys the mood of the place or the owner’s attitude to the world. I draw inspiration from what I liked abroad: these trips have triggered a lot of new ideas and plans, which I can implement in my workplace with an open mind.

I love my job, I’m a lover of my work and my way is accompanied by lucky meetings with people. I can’t stop thinking, even in the shower, about what would make the guest feel even better. I think that’s everyone who loves their job. Then there are not tasks in your life, but solutions. Even ones that you’re looking for answers to before they’ve even come up. When I travel, I am both a guest and a host at the same time. To put it more simply: we wanted a place from where we wouldn’t want to go home easily.

Did you choose the location after much deliberation?

Absolutely not. Although we had been looking for a while, we had been planning for years to do something with Viktoria Ordódy, but suddenly the place found us. It was important not to fall too far. Also to be able to have a good wander around the area. We are both keen hikers, I have also done the National Blue Trail. We were dreaming, planning, and then a friend asked us if we were interested in this property in Nagymaros. We were. Here is the Danube, it is close to everything, with great panoramic views, secluded but still easily accessible: a quiet dead end. The idea for the name Bogyólak came from Bogyó Street. All the attractions of the Danube Bend are within easy reach. If you want to see them from Budapest, you have to wake up at dawn. Here, the guest wakes up and is already ready to go – or not. Because doing nothing in such surroundings, in a hammock with a good book or just enjoying and absorbing the sights and sounds of nature, is as much an experience as active tourism.

Even a Buddha can be converted from his faith by construction work. How did your friendship with Viki Ordódy survive this period?

We did the demolition and construction in a year, starting from zero. We solved a lot of things ourselves. We put our own energy into it, and it turned out to be a good decision, because we see the process and the end result in a completely different way. You will have a different attitude. We are both spontaneous girls, we came up with a lot of things on the go. Flexibly, with big laughs. There was no fixed concept, but we knew that the end result would be what we were, and that was both exciting and reassuring. We also think of our future guests as cool, normal people. People we’d like to be friends with anyway. The house has an orchard with apple trees – we have plans for it! Al fresco dinners in the garden, with your own recipes, chef friends and great wines. We have planned a starting point for hikes, but when we get to the top of the mountain, it’s hard to get us out, we ourselves enjoy being here so much, as well.

The natural areas of the Danube bend and the surroundings of Budapest have become particularly popular in recent years. Tourism expert Róbert Horváth “Baggio” designed and built his luxury retreats Moodhouse 2623 and Vibe Nagymaros, while Eszter Bódi, designer of The Style Police, is building her eco-house next to vineyards. One thing we can be sure of: they all bear the personal creed of their creator.
