Hype&Hyper

‘Workation’, or ‘work’ and ‘vacation’, is an increasingly popular form of tourism around the world, where you can visit new locations and recharge in one place without having to stop working. Rural community offices are a key place for this feeling of being alive, where you can not only break away from your daily routine, but also become part of a community. Let’s see some inspiring examples.

1. OOOffice (Nagymaros)

The banks of the Danube, fresh air and a sandy beach: this is the setting of the OOOffice, located on the cosy and panoramic upper terrace of the Piknik Manufaktúra in Nagymaros. The Community Office is part of the New Wave Bistro and therefore operates seasonally during the summer. In addition to your own workstation, the day pass includes lemonade and coffee. For lunch, you can choose from a selection of dishes from the Picnic Manufaktúra. Here you can have a real “workation” experience, so when you feel like you can’t focus on work, you can take a dip in the Danube.

2. Parókia Coworking (Káptalantóti)

The former parish building in the centre of Káptalantóti is home to this coworking and coliving office. Parókia Coworking not only provides workstations and meeting rooms, but also two apartments with separate entrances in one wing of the building. Small families, couples and even single travellers can stay here. Another strength of the place is that it organises a variety of community programmes in the afternoons and at weekends, such as gymnastics and yoga classes, as well as other leisure activities and lectures. Depending on the weather, you can also explore the surrounding countryside: go cycling in the Káli basin, go swimming on Lake Balaton, or taste the wines of a nearby winery on the way home.

3. PortusHome (Vászoly)

The founder, who has worked as a freelancer for several years, wanted to create a place where you could work in seclusion in nature, but also spend several days there – just like in a holiday home: this is how the PortusHome community office and accommodation in the Balaton Highlands, converted from a former stable, was born. The philosophy of the place is that it is a meeting point, a community space, a fusion of office and accommodation. What makes the concept even more exciting is that it evolves with the seasons: in the warmer months, the spaces are mostly filled with holidaymakers and foreign guests, while in autumn, winter and spring, PortusHome is the venue for corporate team-building, start-up events, hackathons or recharging events. In addition, regular business networking breakfasts, community lunches, gastronomic and sports programmes await visitors.

Another interesting feature of the community is that the founders of the place are organising an international coworking camp for the second time in addition to the programmes in the Balaton Highlands. The two-week Bali Coworking Camp, organized in Indonesia is specifically for freelancers and adventurers. During the camp, you can work in close-to-nature locations after exploring the countryside through a variety of activities.

4. Door Coworking Office (Szeged)

Unlike previous Community offices, the Door was not designed for workation. However, the Szeged Community Office is located in a special place, on the first floor of the Franciscan Monastery on Mátyás Square. Door Coworking is the only monastery coworking office in Europe that is not only a monastery because of its history, but is still inhabited by Franciscans. The new functional space features comfortable workstations and meeting rooms, a kitchenette, lockable lockers and a bicycle storage room. In addition to the basic Baroque-style features of the interior, other distinctive elements include a map on the floor or historical tableaux on the walls. The Door is also actively involved in the development of the city’s start-up community, organising various knowledge-sharing presentations, workshops and training sessions in its event space, as well as a board game night.
