Summer thrills and panoramic views at Zemplén Adventure Park

If you’d like to add a dash of adrenaline to your family vacation, head to Sátoraljaújhely. Zemplén Adventure Park is one of the country’s most diverse active adventure centres, offering a new challenge for every day of your summer break.

The more daring can race down Hungary’s longest bobsled track – approximately 2.2 kilometres – while the panoramic views of the Zemplén Mountains unfold from time to time as they round the curves. You can take the experience to the next level on the extreme slide: you can zoom through the mountains at speeds of up to 35–40 km/h!

On the adventure trails, which offer multiple difficulty levels, you can put both your skill and courage to the test, so daring parents, older children, and teenagers alike will find something to suit them.

If you’re not necessarily looking for such extreme adventures, you can keep both feet on the ground – or almost on the ground. One of the park’s most famous attractions is the National Unity Bridge, stretching between Szárhegy and Várhegy, which connects the two hills at a height of 84 meters. Walking across this world-record-breaking 723-meter-long suspension bridge, you can admire the surrounding forests and the city from a unique perspective. The panorama alone makes it worth the visit, but there are also numerous other attractions in the area.

Lace up our hiking boots and set out to explore Zemplén!

You can take the chairlift up to Magas Hill, where – on a clear day – you can see all the way to the Slovakian mountain ranges from the lookout tower. If you’re up for a longer hike, however, a moderately difficult, roughly 13-kilometer loop trail starts in Füzér, which also leads to the highest points of the Zemplén Mountains: the Kis-Milic and Nagy-Milic peaks. Along the way, you’ll be treated to stunning panoramic views on several occasions: you can catch a glimpse of the houses in Pusztafalu, and from Kakas Hill and the Károlyi Lookout, the view stretches all the way to Magas Hill in Sátoraljaújhely. What makes Nagy-Milic special is that it lies directly on the Hungarian–Slovak border. At the end of the hike, Füzér Castle – one of Zemplén’s most famous landmarks – comes into view once again. We warmly recommend this roughly three-hour hike to experienced hikers.

Hello Hungary’s tip: It’s worth planning a multi-day trip; in that case, we highly recommend the friendly accommodations in Zemplén. For example, in Boldogkőváralja, stay at the Mandalaház; in Litka, at the Kockás Liliom Guesthouse; in Telkibánya, at the Aranybánya Hotel; and in Vizsoly, at Gergő “Mézes” Molnár’s apartments.

Gastronomic stops after a hearty hike

Zemplén is not only a region for active adventures but also an increasingly exciting gastronomic destination. In the town ofEncs, you’ll find the nationally renowned Anyukám mondta, a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand-certified restaurant, where Szabolcs and Szilárd Dudás bake Roman-style pizzas in a wood-fired oven, prepare meats in a smoker and on the grill, and serve classic dishes and decadent desserts. In Göncruszka, at the Tejjel Mézzel Restaurant, you can experience the coziest side of rural hospitality. In the local church’s restaurant, the pastor is the chef, and the menu features hearty dishes made from homemade pasta, fresh dairy products, and seasonal vegetables. If you’re here, be sure to try the congregation’s cold-spun organic honey.

The Lakoma Restaurant, located near Füzér Castle, makes for an ideal stop after the hike mentioned earlier. In addition to local game dishes, the restaurant features ingredients from local producers and house-made pickles. Last but not least, be sure to add the Harsányi Dűlő Bistro and Winery in Sárospatak to your bucket list. In addition to the estate’s own wines, the concise, thoughtfully curated menu is also worth noting: from the Zemplén tapas platter to crème brûlée, you’ll find a variety of exciting dishes.
