Tata is only an hour away from the capital and has something to offer in every season. However, autumn is particularly magical: this is when migratory birds arrive, mainly thousands of wild geese, which the whole family can enjoy watching together.

What can we find out from the article?

  • What is worth seeing in Tata in autumn?
  • What sights can be found around Lake Öreg?
  • What programs does Kálvária Hill offer?

This bustling little town with its Baroque atmosphere has a significant historical past and is also rich in natural treasures: streams, springs, and the country’s oldest fish pond, as well as the Öreg-tó (Old Lake), which is a wintering ground for migratory birds.

If the weather is cooler, you can still hop on your bike if you are dressed appropriately. In fact, the 7.5-kilometer loop around the lake is easy enough for children to complete. The route leads partly along the lakeside promenade and partly along a forest nature trail, allowing you to enjoy both the tranquility of nature and the charming atmosphere of the city.

On the way, you will also see one of the gems of the city, Tata Castle, which was built at the end of the 1300s, and whose walls were redesigned in a romantic style by the Esterházy family in 1815.

If you prefer walking, you will find the English Park next to the Old Lake, one of the oldest and best-preserved English gardens in the country. The 25-hectare park was established in 1783, with the picturesque Lake Cseke at its center. A special feature of the garden is that springs bubble up in several places, made even more romantic by artificial ruins. The three-kilometer-long promenade around Lake Cseke enchants visitors with its small islands, huge plane trees, and willow trees hanging over the water.

Those who are not afraid of a challenge should not miss climbing Calvary Hill. Upon reaching the barren limestone plateau, visitors are enchanted by the sight of the monumental Baroque Calvary statue group. The sculptures realistically depict Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalene at the foot of the cross, the Virgin Mary, and St. John the Apostle. The sight of the cozy white-walled chapel nearby exudes tranquility in the already peaceful landscape.

If you want to go even higher, you will have to climb 175 steps to the top of the 40-meter-high Jakab Fellner lookout tower, which offers unparalleled views of Tata, furthermore, the Gerecse and Vértes mountain ranges. The building was constructed in 1939 as a shot casting tower and is now a favorite destination for tourists.

For those seeking adrenaline, a via ferrata has also been built on the hill, where an adult and a children’s course await climbing enthusiasts, covering a total of around 200 meters.

At the foot of the hill, the Open-Air Geological Museum offers a unique experience: here, you can not only see rocks that are hundreds of millions of years old, but also touch them.

Walking down the hill towards the lake shore, you will arrive at Esterházy Castle. The Esterházy family’s country residence once hosted royal guests. In the furnished building, you can take part in an exhibition that offers a journey through time, experiencing the everyday life of the count’s family.

The Tata Wild Goose Festival is usually held at the end of November. This popular nature conservation and cultural festival is an event based on a natural phenomenon unique in Europe, when wild geese returning from the tundra are welcomed. The event features guided wild goose tours, concerts, gastronomic delicacies, domestic and foreign bird photographers, exhibitions, fairs, craft workshops, competitions, and colorful family and children’s programs.
