More than 100,000 people in Hungary are affected by gluten sensitivity or coeliac disease. These allergies, food intolerances or simply lifestyle changes are encouraging more and more people to look for healthier and easier-to-digest alternatives to traditional baked goods.

Fortunately, more and more bakeries and pastry workshops in our country are offering high-quality gluten-free products, so that even the most sensitive can enjoy the taste of fresh and delicious baked goods. In this article, we present some of the outstanding bakeries where taste and health are intertwined, and where gluten-free bread can be crunchy and delicious.

Vidéki Vekni gluten-free bakery and delicatessen (Dorog)

Opened in 2020, the family business is a unique combination of traditional rural bakeries and modern gluten-free gastronomy. The primary aim of the bakery establishment was to meet the needs of gluten-free consumers in the countryside, without depriving them of delicious baked goods and deli products. The founders know from personal experience the challenges of gluten intolerance and felt that there was no place on the market where you could get truly delicious and quality gluten-free baked goods. This is how the idea of a rural bakery and deli was born, where the products are not only tasty but also healthy. The range is really colourful, but with a strong emphasis on the classics, because if you are gluten intolerant, you know exactly how wonderful it feels to have a delicious, crunchy loaf of bread with a real “bread taste”. In addition to baked goods, free pastries also play a big role, and the deli has almost everything you can imagine, from dry pasta to spices and snacks, all in a naturally free form.

    Zsemle Gluten-free Bakery (Győr)

The Győr-based bakery is backed by a passionate team of people who, along with their families, are also involved in the world of gluten sensitivity. The owners had been looking for the perfect gluten-free baked goods for some time, but hadn’t found a place in their area that they were really happy with. That’s why they decided to open their own bakery, specifically dedicated to gluten-free gastronomy.  Their regular customers confirm that the gap has been filled: already in the opening weeks, many have expressed their pleasure at being able to choose anything from the bakery’s range without having to worry about cross-contamination, and, on top of that, the products are delicious. In addition to the usual baked goods, there are also some real treasures in the pastry section: delicious free pies, creamy pastries, doughnuts and cakes.

    Tulipán Bakery (Siófok)

The Tulipán Bakery in Siófok is all about respecting tradition, with fruit and vegetables grown in the immediate vicinity providing inspiration for the products. Their selection is not only gluten-free, but also 90% yeast-free, dairy-free, lactose-free and vegan. The bakery products are made using only the best quality ingredients, with seeds, buckwheat, millet, tapioca and plantain seed husk flour being common ingredients. These special ingredients provide the valuable nutritional content of these delicious snacks, making them a perfect part of a balanced diet. Here you can try the great classics, such as the cheese or potato scones Grandma used to make, but there are also new wave baked goods, such as the paleo bagel or the multigrain mini baguette.

    Babka Bakery & Coffee (Kecskemét)

The Babka Bakery & Coffee in Kecskemét also offers exclusively gluten-free products, where you can have a good coffee with the gluten-free delicacies, if you wish. The bakery is a real bucket-list place for the experimental, as you can not only get classic pastries in gluten-free form, but also never-before-heard-of and reimagined baked goods. If we are lucky, we can try their snail cakes with currants or spinach, their sweet potato or zucchini scones. The eponymous babka cake is not to be missed either, with several variations on offer, from the classic cocoa base to a peach and vegetable cheesecake combination. It is also worth following the bakery’s social media pages to see their weekly specials, as they surprise their guests with a daily changing offer.

The market for gluten-free baked goods is booming in Hungary, and new, more and more delicious products are constantly being created for both dieters and non-dieters! When you are in the area, head to these pioneering bakeries and grab a tasty healthy bite or two!
