Jousting tournaments, fairy-tale trails, dragons, and damsels – there are places in our country where, after just a few steps, we can feel as if we’ve stepped back into the Middle Ages. What’s more, this “time travel” is most exciting when children aren’t just spectators but active participants in the adventure: they can grab a sword and set off in pursuit of the tales. We’ve gathered a few special locations where the world of knights and fairy-tale realms comes to life again this year.

Bikal Adventure Park, Bikal

One of the most outstanding medieval theme parks in Hungary – indeed, in Europe – is located in the southern part of the country, in the secluded Baranya town of Bikal. Anyone who has been here knows exactly what to expect: the Experience Estate is most reminiscent of a monumental, meticulously designed medieval set, where the range of activities is almost endless. Every corner of the estate holds something to discover, and what’s more, up to three generations can easily find their favourite pastime.

You can wander through the fairy-tale village, peek into the old town workshops, and even rent authentic Renaissance costumes for your adventure! The village features a petting zoo, a witch’s house, a blacksmith’s workshop, and numerous playgrounds; according to many, one of the estate’s most popular attractions is the spectacular medieval tournament held at the Knights’ Arena.

Dinnyés Castle Park and Open-Air Museum – A Guinness World Record-holder castle world, Gárdony-Dinnyés

The Dinnyés Castle Park and Open-Air Museum is a truly unique destination: here, you can wander among miniature replicas of medieval castles from historic Hungary. In this multiple Guinness World Record-holding park, the castle models are crafted from authentic materials – wood, stone, and brick – offering a truly one-of-a-kind experience. During a family stroll, it’s easy to feel as though we’ve stepped into a miniature medieval era, where the castles of Drégely, Eger, or Somoskő come to life before our eyes. The approximately 24,000-square-meter site also features a special open-air museum from the Árpád era, complete with a wooden church, log cabins, and farm animals.

The park regularly hosts demonstrations and traditional cultural programs, and groups can also participate in a costumed knightly trial. Anyone from preschoolers to elementary and high school students can sign up for this program to learn about Hungarian history through age-appropriate skill-based challenges and quizzes.

Katica Farm, Patca

It’s no exaggeration to say that Katica Farm, nestled among the hills of Somogy, is one of the country’s most exciting adventure destinations. Inspired by Eszter Handó and János Handó’s journey around the world, this eco-conscious adventure center features more than a hundred different attractions spread across 13 hectares.

Interestingly, the farm features only attractions that either consume no energy or are powered entirely by renewable energy. With this exemplary, eco-friendly operation, the owners have not only earned the admiration of visitors but have also won numerous awards.

From the petting zoo to the electric racing go-karts and the massive indoor slide complex, there are plenty of activities to try, including a tractor-pulled train ride, or you can get lost in the indoor Adventure Cave. In one corner of the farm, atop a hill, stands an exciting medieval knight’s castle, where, among other things, you can see a dungeon, a torture chamber, a pillory, and flag-topped castle towers in person. Between April and October, the castle hosts Medieval weekends once a month, where you can try your hand at swordplay and archery – and even paint your own coat of arms! On Saturdays, you can even operate a real, life-size catapult: this Medieval contraption, weighing about five tons, can launch a ten-kilogram ball up to 100 meters!

Lovagvölgy, Csesznek

In the Bakony Mountains, at the foot of Csesznek Castle, you can also embark on amazing knightly adventures! The interactive, themed adventure park features countless outdoor attractions: among other things, you can try the slide course, the doughnut slide, the air cannon, and slingshot shooting. In case of inclement weather, you can also participate in exciting activities indoors: in the squire’s houses, the village houses, and the thatched cottage, or even in the escape room and the folk playhouse.

In addition to the attractions, the estate hosts traditional demonstrations, archery programs, and jousting tournaments; during the summer, family programs and camps are also frequently organized, so it’s worth checking the current events in advance.
