- Halloween events at Lake Balaton
If you’re not afraid of a pair of eyes flashing in the dark…
During Halloween, several zoos across the country are organising special evening events, thus instead of the usual daytime visit, we can explore the animal kingdom in a completely different atmosphere.
At the Miskolc Zoo’s Halloween Evening on 31 October, you can explore the zoo even after dark. The organisers have prepared special feeding displays and Halloween-themed activities, and the gates will be open between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. On the same day, the Szeged Wildlife Park is hosting ‘Night of Thrills’, where visitors can expect not only witches, vampires and terrifying animals, but also a petting zoo and special feeding shows. In keeping with previous years’ themes, the organisers have another surprise in store for brave children this year. At Debrecen Zoo, meanwhile, we can look forward to a multi-day end-of-season Halloween celebration at the end of the autumn half-term: the programme will include a test of courage, a maze and a number of fun activities.
In the mysterious labyrinth city of the Bükk Mystery Park, we can wander through mazes lit by the glow of jack-o’-lanterns, and if we’re lucky, we might even stumble upon wonders hidden beneath spider’s webs. As part of ‘Meerkat Saturday’, taking place on 24 and 31 October, you can also meet Csipesz, the tame meerkat. If you’re staying at the Bambara Hotel at the foot of the Bükk Mountains, between 22 October and 1 November you can choose from the Halloween-themed programmes of Witchy Autumn.
Pumpkin-themed fun across the country
You’d be hard-pressed to find a better setting for Halloween than a dark maze. In Ópusztaszer, at the Csillagösvény Labyrinth Eco-Adventure Park, the organisers are preparing for 24 and 31 October with pumpkin carving and night-time wanderings.
The hedge maze, which covers around one and a half hectares, is 3.5 kilometres long and ‘built’ from 35,000 privet bushes, is plunged into darkness at night. Visitors can bring their own light sources into the maze to suit their needs, whilst the truly brave can even rely on the light of the moon.
As part of the programme, you can also enter a pumpkin-carving competition, and there will be demonstrations and a quiz.
One of the classic Halloween activities is, of course, pumpkin carving. On 31 October, a family day featuring pumpkin carving and painting will be held in the gardens of the Huray Villas in Balatonfüred, and at the Tisza Lake Eco-Centre in Poroszló.
Spookily good food for the autumn half-term
If you’re looking for something a bit more unusual to eat on the scariest holiday of the year, we warmly recommend the Bácsalmás Vampire-Repellent Cream. You can pick it up at the Helyi-Ség farmers’ shop in Szeged, but whilst you’re there, why not stock up on some splendid local delicacies: honeys, cordials, teas and jams.
And if you’re fancying a special dinner – or, to be more precise, this time with the children without their parents – the team at the Le Primore Hotel & Spa in Hévíz is once again inviting 6–14-year-olds on a special gastronomic adventure this autumn. Held at La Vie, the ‘rooftop’ restaurant of this five-star superior family-friendly luxury hotel, the Kids Only Gourmet Dinner aims to introduce young guests to the world of modern fine dining in an elegant yet playful setting. The theme of the dinner on 27 October is The Flavours of the Enchanted Forest, during which young guests can sample a six-course menu under the guidance of executive chef Attila Borda. Alongside dishes inspired by autumn and the forest, the chef will introduce curious children to the world of gastronomy with a playful yet professional touch – ensuring that those open to the experience will be introduced to a truly unique culinary journey.
Halloween at Lake Balaton
We cannot emphasise enough that Lake Balaton is buzzing in autumn, as well, and there are countless exciting events to discover on the shores of the ‘Hungarian Sea’. This is especially true at Halloween, when BAHART’s Halloween children’s boat sets sail. Alongside the boat trip, you can even plan a day out on Lake Balaton or a family pumpkin-carving session – after all, during Halloween, you don’t have to stay cooped up indoors all day.
