The rediscovered world of open-air cinemas
Open-air cinemas have a long tradition in Hungary, and in the Lake Balaton region, they have become particularly intertwined with summer evenings. Although they faded into the background for a time, in recent years more and more people have been seeking out these events, where watching a movie becomes a communal experience, and where there’s still time for a walk or a longer conversation before or after the screening. Moreover, the open-air cinemas at Lake Balaton offer more than just a nostalgic atmosphere: their lineups often include new releases, classics, and family films, making them a meaningful evening activity for multiple generations.
Experience the Lake Balaton vibe on four wheels!
Hello Hungary’s tip: Just like outdoor movie theatres, drive-in theatres are becoming increasingly popular across the country. A summer evening screening still captures something of the atmosphere of those old summers at Lake Balaton: it’s as if we’ve stepped into a black-and-white film, where a convertible – or at least a car with a sunroof – is practically a must-have for a date. This nostalgic feeling of life also includes taking your time on the journey: when we’re not rushing anywhere, we drive along the shore with the windows down, stop for a romantic dinner along the way, and end the evening with an outdoor screening.
According to Ildikó Schreiber, Head of Marketing and Communications at Euroleasing Zrt., many people today are looking for a car that offers a comfortable solution for both longer and shorter trips. Spacious SUVs and crossovers are therefore particularly popular for travel, while interest in electric models is also steadily growing. Euroleasing’s lineup, for example, includes compact models ideal for city use, as well as larger family cars and state-of-the-art electric SUVs, such as the electric Jeep Avenger, the Renault Scenic E-Tech, and the Nissan Ariya. And if we’re sticking with convertibles, the Fiat 500e Cabrio or the Mazda MX-5 are definitely worth considering!
Open-air cinema amid the summer buzz of the southern shore
One of the southern shore’s long-standing summer gathering spots is the Zamárdi Open-Air Cinema, where this town – known for its festivals – also offers a more relaxed evening activity. One of the unique features of open-air cinemas is the slow, leisurely transition from day to night. They don’t operate as isolated events, but as a natural part of a Lake Balaton vacation, where the screening is just as much about the community atmosphere as it is about the film itself.
The Balatonlelle summer cinema experience
On the southern shore, the Balatonlelle Open-Air Cinema has also been a defining venue for years. Here, too, the screenings evoke the atmosphere of classic Lake Balaton evenings: warm summer air, outdoor chairs, a sky slowly darkening, and the buzz before the movie begins. In Balatonlelle, you can easily incorporate a movie into a full-day itinerary: after a day at the beach, a stroll around the harbour, or dinner, the evening can continue with an outdoor screening. Be prepared for a completely different experience than sitting down to watch a movie in a traditional theatre! Here, popcorn isn’t the star of the show: these evenings are characterized by Balaton wines, the chatter of children, and lively conversations.
Screening among the hills of Csopak
One of the well-known summer movie theatres in the Balatonfüred area is the Csopak Open-Air Cinema, which has been a part of the town’s summer life for years. The outdoor setting, the screening area built among the trees, and the proximity to Lake Balaton all combine to create that unique atmosphere that keeps many people coming back for an evening movie. The lineup usually includes popular new releases, but there’s also room for family-friendly and lighter summer films. Csopak can also be a great starting point for an entire evening: the beach, lakeside walks, and local restaurants can easily be combined with a late-night screening.
More than just nostalgia
The popularity of Lake Balaton’s open-air cinemas clearly shows that during summer getaways, many people seek out simpler, more personal experiences and spaces. An outdoor screening isn’t just about watching a movie; it’s also about how a summer evening unfolds: at a slower pace, in community, and in the open air. And around Lake Balaton, we can still find plenty of charming venues for this.
