The Szegi Cellar, owned by Grand Tokaj Winery, is the largest contiguous cellar system in the Tokaj wine region and in Central and Eastern Europe. The two-story cellar system, which is more than five kilometers long, was created by connecting the 400-year-old quarries of the volcanic Hatalos Hill for the maturation of Tokaj’s noble sweet wines. The rock of the hill is volcanic rhyolite tuff, which was first mined in the 1600s. The stone powder extracted here was first used as an abrasive, and later for painting houses and stone dusting. The passages cut into the rhyolite tuff connect four underground stone powder mines on two levels, providing perfect conditions for the barrel and bottle-aged noble sweet wines maturing here. On the upper level of the cellar system, six parallel rooms have been created for the safe storage of museum-quality aszú wines that are unique in the wine region. You can get to know the wide range of produced by Grand Tokaj Winery during a wine tastings.
