Hungary awaits: In the footsteps of painters and writers around Lake Balaton
Reformation-era milieu and contemporary arts
One of the places on the bucket list of visitors to Balatonfüred is the former villa of Mór Jókai, which was built at a time when you could still admire the view of Tihany from its terrace. Several of the writer's novels are linked to the summers spent here, and in the memorial museum made from the villa, walking through the period-authentic spaces, we get the feeling that Jókai himself will greet us from behind the next door.
On the other side of Honvéd Street, the number one stronghold of contemporary art of Füred, the Vaszary Gallery, invites you to come in. In the former prince-primate's summer house, exhibitions regularly alternate, with the current exhibition Mácsai 24.

The newest exhibition space in Füred, the Modern Art Gallery, or the Szöllősi-Nagy–Nemes Collection, is located just a few steps away, opposite the former summer house of Lujza Blaha. The art collector couple's rich collection, representing modern and contemporary, international and Hungarian geometric art, has returned home from Paris after thirty years. The gallery also offers guided tours for children.
The painter of Lake Balaton and light
In Badacsony, on the Egry promenade, you can find the memorial museum built from the studio of József Egry, one of the most original representatives of 20th-century Hungarian painting. The painter was obsessed with Lake Balaton, there is no time of day that would not have inspired him to pick up a brush. It is an uplifting feeling to see the landscape of Lake Balaton through his eyes, be it a rainbow over the lake, the silhouette of Badacsony or the double mountain peaks of Fonyód. Anyone who loves Lake Balaton will fall even more in love with the Hungarian sea after seeing Egry's paintings. In the memorial house, you can see a rich selection of his main works, but you can also follow his not-at-all-ordinary life journey.

The lyrical universe of Attila József
The most famous building of the villa row in Balatonszárszó, the former Horváth guest-house, is home to the Attila József Memorial Museum. This is the building where one of the greatest Hungarian poets spent the last days of his life, it was from here that he set off on his tragic walk in December 1937, from which he never returned, having been run over by a freight train.
However, at the imposing memorial site, you forget the tragedy, and you are truly absorbed by the genial intellectual cosmos of the poet, who lived only 32 years, and his multifaceted poetry, which can appeal to all ages. Among the previously unpublished photos and documents, the interpretation of Attila József's unfinished Rorschach test deserves attention.

TIP: When visiting Balatonszárszó, do not miss the Attila József monument. Near the lake shore, opposite the railway station, a poignant “poetry sculpture” stands on a pair of train wheels, placed on a track, recalling the poet's works in more than 5,000 letters.
House of Jewish Excellence
In the former synagogue building in Balatonfüred, you can learn about the lives and work of more than four hundred Jewish luminaries, from Nobel Prize-winning scientists to world-famous artists and Olympic champions, using the latest digital tools.
