Markets function as both shopping venues and community spaces: seasonal ingredients and local stories ”meet” here. We looked around Transdanubia in search of great markets and fairs.

The market is not just a place to shop, but also a meeting point and community space. If you want to get closer to local ingredients and the people behind them, it’s worth visiting the markets to discover the most exciting stalls around Lake Balaton and the western part of the country.

Mornings in the Balaton Uplands have their own rhythm. The Tihany Market Square (Tihanyi Piac Placc) is located next to the Tihany ferry and is filled with people every Saturday from April to December. It is an attractive destination not only because of the lavender hills, but also because the producers themselves offer their wares here: cheeses, syrups, baked goods, seasonal vegetables, and handicrafts. While shopping, it is easy to strike up a conversation with the producers and find out when it is worth returning for a particular delicacy.

Ákos Peleskey, one of the founders of the market, says:

The Tihany Market Square is not just a market, but a meeting point in the Balaton Uplands.

We carefully select our vendors because quality is our top priority: whether it’s food, handicrafts, antiques, or home decor, every stand offers genuine value and a personal story. Although there are few local producers in the Balaton Uplands, many come from the wider region, so the selection remains diverse and exciting. Our community role is particularly strong in the spring months: when the beach season and boat traffic have not yet begun, Placc becomes the social hub of the area, where friends, neighbours, city dwellers, and locals meet. We believe that in the coming years, an even closer relationship will develop between locals, vacation home owners, and the city administration – because our goal is for the market to be a real community space where people can not only shop but also connect.”

Keszthely has a long tradition of market trading. The Keszthely Market is open all year round, so you can visit not only in summer but also during the quieter months. The stalls are lined with products from the western basin of Lake Balaton, from fish to homemade jams. From here, you can easily walk to the city center or the pier, turning your market visit into a full morning program.

A few kilometers away, the Hévíz Farmers’ Market shows the quieter side of the spa town. While walking around the lake, it’s nice to stop for a glass of freshly squeezed juice or some locally made pastries. The market is smaller, but that’s what gives it its atmosphere: here, you can really take your time browsing.

If you are visiting the Balaton Uplands, head to Káptalantóti! The Liliomkert Market has long been a household name in the region. Early on Sunday mornings, the village fills up with vegetables, farmhouse cheeses, homemade syrups, and handmade goods on display at the stalls. It is no coincidence that the market’s popularity remains unbroken, with its unique, fairy-tale atmosphere created by the small stalls lined up among the winding, shady trees. The witness mountains stand out in the background, making shopping here almost like an excursion.

The south shore is no exception. The Fonyód market is one of the largest markets on Lake Balaton, where antique dealers and craftsmen appear alongside producers. Due to its proximity to the harbour, it is easy to combine shopping at the market with a walk along the waterfront. It is also worth visiting the Balatonalmádi market, where you can buy fresh ingredients for an evening meal to complement your lakeside vacation.

The smaller settlements of the Balaton Uplands have a particularly strong community spirit. The Hegymagasi market near Szigliget has a family atmosphere: locals and holidaymakers browse the stalls together, with the silhouette of the castle in the background.

Heading towards Zala, we discover another side to market trading. The Market in the Garden (Piac a Kertben) in Nagykanizsa is located in a green environment and has a suburban atmosphere. Here, the emphasis is on the presence of producers and a transparent, seasonal selection. The market is open every Friday afternoon throughout the year, and shopping is often complemented by community programs.

The common feature of the farmers’ markets in Transdanubia is their personal touch. We don’t just take home goods from here, but also stories: we learn which hillside the tomatoes ripened on, how the cheese was made, when fresh strawberries will be available again. When we set off with a basket in our hands, the villages and towns of Lake Balaton and the western region show us a completely different side of themselves – we get closer to what the landscape really means.
