The Ópusztaszer National Heritage Park awaits its visitors on more than 55 hectares with nearly 40 different programmes: from the youngest to the eldest, there is something exciting for everyone, just choose!

Perhaps the best-known attraction of the park, the Feszty Panorama, is found in one of the main buildings, the Rotunda. The cyclorama measures 15 metres tall and 120 metres long, forming a panorama painting with a 38 metre diameter, entitled The Arrival of the Hungarians, which has dazzled visitors to Ópusztaszer for decades with its monumental size and elaborate detail. During the design of the related exhibitions as well as new attractions, the introduction of modern, multimedia solutions has come into sharp focus, so we can also encounter several exciting interactive exhibition elements. Those who are interested in archaeology can take part in the “archaeologist trick” activity, which gives them an insight into archaeological work and the science of anthropology. Those who prefer literature can join the literary rendezvous called A Cup of Literature taking place in Feszty salon where among the scenery of Árpád Feszty’s literary salon, they may evoke contemporary writers, poets, and the most important literary moments.

It is also worth visiting the Szer Herbs House and Garden, which was built in 2017, after the model of medieval monastic garden culture. The “Practice of Szer” programme is held at the Herb House, during which participants are invited to travel back in time nearly ten centuries. During the session, you can gain insight into the secrets of the monastery garden: you can taste and smell the most characteristic ancient herbs and spices, and learn how to use them. More creative candidates, as young as five years old, can also immerse themselves in the mysteries of working with clay at this location. A gift shop has also been set up in the facility, in which local, micro-regional producers, craftsmen and artists’ unique products are available.

However, it’s not just the interiors of the park that offer exciting opportunities: there are also many outdoor exhibitions. The open-air ethnographic collection, the village museum, houses several historical buildings where we can learn about peasants’ daily life in earlier times. The open-air exhibit, in contrast to the classic exhibitions, is very much alive, and we can even actively “participate in the exhibition” through the classes given here. And what could be more vibrant than the smell of scones baked in fresh ash? In the “Bake, Bake, Bake” programme, visitors can gain insight into the science of baking in the oven, from milling the flour to making the fresh delicacies. In the meantime, the youngest ones can get to know Palkó Halász's tale as part of a drama pedagogy programme with folk tales and folk music elements.

The Nomad Park, home to the yurt camp, also welcomes visitors with a plethora of colourful activities: you can try nail-braiding, felting, copper embossing and runic writing, among other things, but you can also learn about the relationship between horse and man, in which the braver ones can hop on one of the horses for a photo. For those who like active recreation, the “I shot a buck” archery programme is an almost obligatory element, where they can not only take the famous recurve bow in their hands, but also test their skills in target shooting. The Puszta House is the environmental and nature education training centre of the heritage park, where the treasures of forest programme provides an opportunity to get to know the plants and animals of the forest in a playful way. In the “Our Friends the Birds” session, you can get detailed training in the science of bird identification so that you can even identify them based on their song.

The Ópusztaszer National Heritage Park awaits its visitors all year round, with various programmes and events - however, some programmes run on a seasonal basis, so you should ask for information in advance. We can easily become returning guests, as the entire heritage park has too much to discover in one day: there is always another hidden treasure, a new programme that would be a real shame to miss!
