The Castle of Sümeg is perhaps the strongest castle in Hungarian history: the Turks never managed to take it by siege. Built on a hilltop, this relatively intact medieval fortress is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful in the country. Interactive exhibitions offer a glimpse into its rich history, while its summer programmes include jousting tournaments and castle games. From carriage and arms museums to a historical theme park, a castle tavern, a wine bar or rose gardens – there is something for everyone. Within the walls of the castle, you can also taste the famous Sümeg chimney cake.
