One of the interesting features of the 14th-century Gothic-style border castle is that it was not built with stones, but with bricks fired on site from the clay of the Körös rivers. The fort, with its distinctive red colour, has survived in excellent condition. After 129 years of Turkish rule, it was a brewery, a distillery, an archive and a prison, and today it is a museum, with 24 rooms, where you can learn about Gyula’s rich history. There are also blacksmith and pottery workshops, and traditional and military demonstrations are a regular feature.
