Gyula Castle’s historical programme focuses on the circumstances and consequences of this fateful battle, offering an opportunity to learn about the events beyond the confines of school history lessons. In the year marking the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács, it is particularly timely to reflect on this era. The situation of the Medieval Kingdom of Hungary, Ottoman expansion and the political upheaval following the defeat are all issues that help us understand why Mohács became one of the most significant turning points in our history. Moreover, within the walls of Gyula Castle, it is particularly easy to imagine the world in which these events took place.
