What the Csingervölgy mine fables about
Szabó Sára
There is a quiet little settlement in Bakony, which played a huge role in the economic boom of Ajka and the region: Csingervölgy, a small area that was once an important location for Hungarian coal mining. In the 1850s, significant coal deposits were discovered here, thanks to which the Csingervölgy mine was also opened. During the period of industrialization, coal became an extremely important source of energy, so the mine began to develop rapidly - especially at the beginning of the 20th century, when several shafts were opened and modern mining technologies were introduced. A mining settlement developed soon around Csingervölgy, where residential buildings, a school and other community institutions were built for the workers. For a long time, the mining community was decisive in the life of the area, but with the gradual decline of mining, the fate of the well-known valley was sealed. After about 139 years, in 2004, the mine was finally closed. Today, Csingervölgy is a memorial site, where old buildings and mining relics show the importance of coal mining in the past and the daily life of miners.
Searching for water and a library in the forest
Thanks in part to mining, water has always played an important role in Bakony. This heritage is commemorated by an exciting, nature trail-like tour, the Path of Water Seekers. Along the 8-kilometre route, you will find information boards that explain various water-related points of interest related to water extraction, water treatment and mining. You can learn a lot by following the trail, including old reservoirs, springs, drainage ditches and other water facilities used by miners and local communities. Along the way, you can see, for example, the former water collection system, which helped the mines and also provided the drinking water needed by the population.
If you are roaming in the region, be sure to visit the Csingervölgy reading cabin! This special little wooden house was dreamt up by the local community with the aim that anyone could settle down and pick up a book in the middle of the forest
The shelves in the cabin are stocked with a variety of books that you can borrow freely but you can also donate books to the community. The cabin functions as a kind of "book stop" and is popular among hikers not only for its special function, but also for its architectural character. The reading cabin also hosts social events, such as reading meetings and literary programmes.
If we plan for the whole weekend
If you were to spend several days around Ajka, this area offers countless attractions - especially for lovers of history and nature walkers. A visit to the Csingervölgy Mining Museum is a highly recommended programme for little ones who love machines, where you can see old machines, shafts and other mining equipment. The Miner's Monument erected in honour of the mining community is also worth visiting, which symbolizes the unity of the locals and respect for mining traditions. Wreaths are often laid and memorial services are held at the monument. Another highlight is the Csingervölgy Wildlife Park and Visitor Centre, where you can observe fallow and red deer, mouflons, roe deer and wild boars up close.
Looking further afield: Thury Castle in Várpalota is also worth a drive! This beautiful medieval fortress offers many exhibitions and cultural events. The castle was built in the 14th century and it played a significant role in the battles against the Turks. Not far from here, we find the Thermal Power Plant of Inota, which was an iconic industrial facility of the region and supplied the region with energy for a long time. Today it is considered an interesting place from the point of view of industrial history and a favourite spot for photographers, and a popular location for photographers, but it is also where the Inota Festival is held, which simultaneously pays tribute to industrial heritage, music and visual art. Last but not least, a lookout point on the nearby Baglyas Hill offers a wonderful view of Bakony and the surrounding settlements, which can be a great hiking destination for those who love nature walks.
