Treasures hide along the Bódva

In Northern Hungary, just half an hour's drive from Miskolc, you can find the small region of Edéleny which is located in one of the most favourable spots of the Borsod landscape. Located at the junction of the magical Bódva valley and the Aggteleki karst, the area is dotted with limestone mountains, karst surfaces and caves. The gentle bends of the Bódva wonderfully shape the image of the region, in the valley and along the tributaries of the river you can discover many secret settlements rich in natural and cultural values. In the area, you can find the small village of Cserehát, which exudes a genuine village atmosphere, and Galyaság, one of our country's secret ethnographic small regions. Edelény, one of the cosy towns in the region, is outstanding not only in terms of its natural beauty, but also in terms of its historical significance.

A fabulous castle island, where you can admire the country's largest connected Rococo wall-paintings!

If you go there, the Edelényi Castle Island is an unmissable sight, which is one of the most special sights not only of the city, but of the entire region. This is one the biggest and most impressive baroque castles in Hungary, which is located on a picturesque island and offers a fairytale-like view on the banks of the Bódva. The castle was built in 1716 by Jean-François L'Huillier, a nobleman from Lorraine. The magnificent baroque style of the building still evokes the luxury of 18th-century aristocratic life, and the renovated interiors await visitors with modern exhibitions and interactive experiences. The greatest ornaments of the castle are the artistically restored frescoes, which bring to life the everyday life and mythological stories of the time in every corner of the building.

Hello Hungary tip: The park of the castle island is worth a visit in itself. The arranged green space and the romantic environment is ideal for a pleasant walk or picnic. In addition, the castle also hosts programmes and cultural events, so it is worth checking out the annual programme!
