On the trace of the scent of leaf mould; the autumn's hit programme: hiking

  • Uzonyi Nóra
It's hard to forgive summer for slipping away so quickly, but you can't fight the circulation of nature. To seize the opportunities of the new season however is almost a must. As autumn offers a wealth of themed activities. Although harvests, festivals and other events are not always budget-friendly, an excursion is almost free of charge. We show you what to keep in mind to make sure you remain smiley even after taking a glace into our wallet once you go on these walks, cheering up your body and soul .

A peaceful wander versus a tough hike

They both have their beauty: walking at an easy pace among the falling autumn leaves is a flow experience. The mind gets cleared, breathing slows down, the tsunami of thoughts abates and the stress is replaced by a peaceful relaxation.

Of course, you can get a similar sense of flow if you choose a route where, by keeping your balance, conquering small or larger rocks, or maintaining some form of climbing or crawling makes you focus on the miracle of the present moment.

Choosing your location: travel smart

Hiking spots in the immediate neighbourhood of a residence become boring after a while. Unless, of course, the yeti turns up unexpectedly, but since 'the experts' say it doesn't live in Hungary, the chance of that happening are quite small.

Luckily, Hungary is full of beautiful landscapes to explore. Drivers undoubtedly have some advantage, even though with the current fuel prices it is often wiser to use some form of public transport. And if we still want to use the car, get a large group of friends together and share the cost of the journey.

The eternal elementary problem: "I'm hungry!"

Probably - by the way - within the first 10 minutes right after departure...

It's always important to eat, especially when you're on a hike. If you're going to places which lack restaurants and cafés, it's worth to prepare some sandwiches and soft drinks. Plus, chocolate, biscuits, or homemade cakes too, because you need the energy to walk and, more importantly, because sweets are too good to renounce them. If you're travelling with a large group, you can even organise a complete picnic. You don't have to go for the classic version: it's enough if everyone brings a different treat to enjoy over a nice chat.

Good morning to our inner child

As adults, it's easy to forget how much fun it was as a child to jump across the stream of a river, balance on logs, climb trees or even some rocks, stop to play football with chestnuts, intentionally jump into a puddle with Wellington boots on, or get a little "lost" for the sake of adventure. On your next hike, let's try to get back to your childish self: put aside limiting thoughts and live in the moment: it will be mind-blowingly liberating!

Say cheese = let's take photos, photos, photos

While we strongly encourage you to put your mobile phone away for the duration of your trip, whether you're travelling with friends or family, it’s camera is worth to be used regularly. It's not necessary to capture all the leaves, but it's great to capture the best moments of the trip, which will mean joyful memories forever.

Embracing the essence of the forest

Nature must be taken care of, and as a basic rule for hikers, for example, you shouldn't leave litter in the forest. However, when you return home after a long hike, it feels so good to have something - apart from the photos - that can bring the energy of the trees and soil into your home. A great, and environmentally friendly way to do this is to collect a big bunch of rust-coloured leaves or some chestnuts and other fallen crops. It's great to have a glance at these weekend memories during the week - and it's a fun way to give kids a useful base for a craft on a rainy afternoon.
