The mysterious world of the marshes
When we set out on the water near Kányavári Island, we are immediately struck by the tranquillity of the landscape. István Fekete once wrote of this region: “I cherished this scene in my thoughts for a long time, until it became a memory – may it live on as long as I do.” The world of the marshy floodplains leaves a deep impression on visitors; as we paddle through the dense reeds, it’s easy to feel as if time has stood still. Gliding silently across the water, we can approach the inhabitants of the wilderness. If we’re lucky, herons, coots, and grey herons will take flight beside us, and we might even catch a glimpse of red deer or otters cooling off in the water, hidden among the trees.
Guided tours on the water
Since Kis-Balaton is a strictly protected area, no one is allowed to paddle in on their own without a guide. The rules are strict, but this is precisely what ensures the undisturbed peace of the wildlife. However, on the two- to three-hour guided canoe tours organized by Kányavári Kenutúra, you can explore these hidden waterways in a peaceful setting.
Experienced tour guides enrich the program with fascinating stories. They tell us about the wildlife and the lives of the marshlands’ former fishermen and reed cutters.
A protected bird paradise
This wetland serves as an important filtration system for protecting Lake Balaton, and its restoration is a testament to the work of the water resources engineers. Thanks to the restoration efforts of recent decades, a rich variety of flora and fauna has developed in this marshland fed by the Zala River.
Numerous rare bird species have found nesting grounds here. The silence experienced while paddling helps us slow down and get closer to this unique natural area. It is important to remain quiet during your visit and respect the peace of the wilderness, as we are guests in this highly protected area.
Useful information
The tours are leisurely paced and require minimal physical fitness, making them suitable even for families with young children. The programs are available from spring through fall, with groups departing daily in the morning and afternoon.
The starting point, Kányavári Island, can be reached by car from Balatonmagyaród, where paid parking is available. You can also arrive by bike from Zalakaros or from the direction of Lake Balaton.
After the canoe tour, it’s worth exploring the island on foot by crossing the distinctive wooden bridge, where the Great Crested Grebe Nature Trail and bird-watching observation decks await you.
If you’re staying for several days, hotels, guesthouses, and campgrounds in Zalakaros offer accommodations, and you can also relax at the Zalakaros thermal baths. Don’t miss the Bird Observatory or the Fenyvespuszta petting zoo either!
After our hike, we can admire Kis-Balaton from a bird’s-eye view at the Kányaváry Winery while sampling local wines on the terrace.
