One of our most important landscape gardens in Tata is the English Park, which was created by the Esterházy counts based on the plans of Ferenc Böhm – but Sámuel Mikoviny also contributed to its design, who spent decades transforming the marshy area into two large lakes (Cseke Lake) and watercourses. One of the garden’s biggest attractions is the artificial ruin designed by Charles Moreau, which was built from Roman tombstones and stones from the medieval abbey in Vértesszentkereszt. In addition to native tree species, the park was one of the first in Hungary to plant trees that were fashionable at the time, such as Japanese acacia, sycamore, plane tree, western hackberry, weeping willow, cigar tree, ironwood, blood tree, and red oak. Later, conifers and fern pines were also added. The park is a popular place for relaxation and entertainment, with an outdoor stage operating in the summer.
