Family adventures in Békés county - adventure parks, theme parks, educational paths
Káldi Emese
In Békéscsaba, the Csaba Park boat pond was already a fun place for children and adults alike - but besides water bike rental or the petting zoo, from spring 2022 there will also be an exciting climbing park. The more adventurous can test themselves at the eight-metre high rope course, but those who want to go even higher can climb a 16-metre high climbing tower, with several levels of difficulty. In fact, The bigger ones can also slide down the canopy course, which is almost 300 metres long and goes right across the lake. The park also has a lovely playground and restaurant, as well as the “Tanya- és Gabonamúzeum” (Farm and Grain Museum), so you can plan a longer stay here!
The “Póstelek Szabadidőpark”, (Póstelek Recreation Park) located halfway between Gyula and Békéscsaba, is also in a beautiful area with woods and parkland. The ancient park of the former Széchenyi-Wenckheim family castle is a wild and magical place, and children will also enjoy a tour of the ruins of the lavish castle, built in the early 20th century and featuring over seventy rooms. The Wenckheim-Széchenyi educational path is a great help here, as the information boards on the trail tell you about the life of the manor in olden days, the castle's furnishings and even show you plenty of archive photos! It is also nice to walk around, watch deer in the mini wildlife park, wander in the park or even take a ride on a horse-drawn carriage. For active recreation, there's also a play park on the campsite, with a trampoline, a small rope course, a sandpit, and we even can play chess and nine men’s morris with giant pieces.
Another exciting thing about Békés County is that the seemingly monotonous, flat landscape is intersected by the waters of the Körös river, creating magical places like the Szarvas Arboretum, or “Pepi-kert” (Pepi Garden). With no preconceptions, this is one of the most varied experiences in the country. There's a herb garden and a biblical-themed garden area, but we also highly recommend the “Harcsa-tanösvény” (Catfish Educational Path), a one-and-a-half kilometre self-guided water trail with five stations. You can rent a kayak or canoe here (not in the arboretum).
For those who prefer to stay on solid ground, the “Csodaösvény” (Wonder Trail) is also great fun! This is an adventure course full of challenges, which players must complete to save the arboretum from the eternal winter and cold. Those who want to complete the challenge, which comprises 12 different puzzles, will be given a story bag with all the tools and a booklet, and if they follow Lucky the owl along the path and solve the tasks cleverly, the arboretum will be saved. Of course, the trail will take you to the most beautiful parts of the “Pepi-kert” (Pepi Garden), so you can playfully explore the incidentally not small area!
And if all this wasn't enough, you can also visit the “Mini Magyarország Makettpark” (Mini Hungary model village)(but there is also a combined ticket) independent of the arboretum. You can spend hours admiring the beauty of Hungarian castles, fortresses and churches in Hungary and abroad, and delving into the details of the mini-Balaton - with nearly a hundred miniature sites. But the best thing is that everything in this park is (almost) like the real thing. When you press the buttons for each model, the scene comes to life: trains speed up, or the church bells ring. It's no wonder that, as well as the children, adults are also smiling as they follow the trains - the experience is truly captivating.
