Hype&Hyper

A snowy landscape, beautifully frosted branches and an idyllic festive atmosphere: when Mrs. Santa shakes her snowy duvet, we witness magic. Although heavy, cross-country snowfall is not common in Hungary, in some areas it is not uncommon to see thick snow cover. Among other places, the Mátra and Bükkszentkereszt are the fairytale landscapes where a touch of magic – the ringing of bells and the sound of hooves – often comes to life. Let us introduce the forgotten but all the more exciting horse-drawn sleigh rides!

Let us introduce the forgotten but all the more exciting horse-drawn sleigh rides!

Sledges have been in use since ancient times, with different versions evolving in different cultures. The first sledges were probably simple pieces of wood or branches that were dragged or pushed across the surface of the snow or ice. The origin and development of horse-drawn sleighs is region-dependent, and many varieties have evolved in different climatic and cultural contexts. For example, northern peoples, such as the Samoyeds or the Inuits, have long used sledges for transporting people and goods in snow-covered areas. We have come up with the idea of riding sleighs in the snowy season for an absolutely different purpose, so let’s put on our warmest coats and try this interesting sport!

Lovers of equestrian sports can also choose horse-drawn sleigh rides as a winter alternative, but they are also a great choice for more comfortable hikers. This traditional and attractive pastime, which offers the opportunity to experience the closeness of nature and to deepen the relationship with horses, is becoming increasingly popular in Hungary, too. Horse-drawn sleigh rides offer a chance to get away from the city noise and enjoy the silence and beauty of the winter landscape. Sitting on the sleigh, you can see the forest from a new perspective and discover its hidden world. Perhaps one of the successes of horse-drawn sleigh rides is that whatever company you take part with, it’s almost certain to grow into a lifetime experience – whether it is a family event, a romantic proposal, or a day out with friends.

Where can we hop on a sleigh?

Hungary offers many opportunities for the enthusiasts of horse-drawn sleigh riding.

Starting with Bükkszentkeresztt, one of the centres of this special sport. It offers an excellent opportunity for both sleigh-riding enthusiasts and competitors. The village is located in the area of the Bükk National Park, so you can slide in a beautiful natural environment. If permitted by the weather, the traditional Horse-drawn sleigh race in Bükkszentkereszt is held, where horses and their “riders” can test their strength in a family event. The competition is a real eye-catcher, popular with photographers, too. If you are looking for a different kind of excitement, the two-day event starts with a pig slaughter show, but you can also take part in snow building and doughnut making competitions.
A romantic programme alternative for couples is the horse-drawn sleigh tour in the Mátra. With this elegant programme, the wild landscape conveys a sense of old times to sleigh riders. The Mátra is a popular destination for horse riders, with numerous riding programmes and riding stables.

In the area, the Gyöngyös-Mátra Tourist Association regularly advertises off-road horse riding opportunities, where horse and rider can experience incredible moments. This programme is mainly recommended for experienced horse riders.  If it’s the proximity of snow that inspires you the most, head for the Mátraszentistván Ski Park, nestled among the country’s highest villages, where leisurely skiers can enjoy gentle slopes and challenge seekers can hit the 10 different trails.

If you take your time and wait for the moment, the above-mentioned tours can take you to fabulous places. The biting cold and the tranquillity of the horse will keep visitors recharged even on the coldest days. It’s not for nothing that sleigh riding is said to be therapeutic, as even Mediterranean souls are warmed by the crunching snow, the sliding of the sled or sleigh and the tranquillity of nature. Of course, don’t forget to dress in layers before your outings, completed with a blanket and warm tea on the sleigh.

The above programmes are weather dependent, so it is advisable to enquire about them in advance.
