  • Practical tips on how to get there and when to go

Rural pace, on two wheels

Hopping on a bike in Sellye is a great decision. The roads are flat, traffic is light, and the landscape doesn’t change much. Here

it’s not embarrassing to pedal slowly –

in fact, it’s definitely the right thing to do. After all, we don’t want to just “get the ride over with.” We want to enjoy it.

Perhaps the best thing about tours around Sellye is that the villages aren’t presented as attractions, but as a natural part of the environment. A pub on the main street, a few old houses, a bus stop – these all are part of the journey. You feel that you’re not just a visitor to this landscape, but that you’re part of it. If you love those places where nothing special happens, yet they offer so much, then these routes are for you.

The Sellye Arboretum: when we get off our bikes

The Sellye Arboretum is the perfect first (or even last) stop. Shady walking paths, countless plants, and old trees – it’s exactly the kind of setting where it feels good to slow down a bit. It’s worth walking into the arboretum, even if you arrived on two wheels. The pace here automatically slows down, as the arboretum is simply stunning. It’s nice to sit down on a bench, look around, reflect, and relax.

Tip: It’s most beautiful from spring through fall, but in the summer, it’s particularly nice to

relax under the shady trees,

especially after a long bike ride.

Roads along the Drava: flat, green, and peaceful countryside

From Sellye, it’s easy to reach the side roads leading toward the Drava; for example, you can head toward Drávasztára and then on to Felsőszentmárton. These sections aren’t technically challenging and don’t require intense concentration. If you’re not looking for a tough workout but just want to clear your mind, give them a try! Long straightaways, fields, and forest edges alternate with the occasional bend. And you can even feel the proximity of the Drava in the air.

Who is Sellye ideal for on a bike?

This area isn’t for those seeking extreme challenges. It’s much more suited to those who:

  • enjoy riding alone (or with just a few people),
  • don’t mind if the scenery isn’t “Instagram-worthy,”
  • and appreciate the quiet, the greenery, and the simplicity.

Practical cycling tips for Sellye

One of the great advantages of cycling around Sellye is that you don’t have to overplan. Most of the roads are paved and in fairly good condition, with light traffic – especially on the stretches connecting smaller villages. This makes it ideal not only for experienced cyclists but also for those who don’t ride as often.

What kind of bike should you bring?

A trekking, cross, or city bike is more than enough. Thick tires aren’t required, as you won’t be encountering any technical terrain. The focus here isn’t on the equipment, but on feeling comfortable. However, wearing a helmet is recommended.

Route planning: take it easy

Starting from Sellye, it’s easy to head off in several directions, and even if we change course along the way, it’s no big deal. The area is particularly well-suited for navigating on a whim, which is a rare luxury these days.

Water, rest and stops

It’s a good idea to bring plenty of water with you, as there are few stores or snack bars along the longer stretches. At the same time, there’s no shortage of places to rest: benches, shady trees, and bus stops all offer opportunities to take a break.

What will you remember most about Sellye?

Not an iconic building, not the must-see attractions. Rather, the atmosphere. The feeling that it was good to slow down, to want less, and not to rush back anywhere.

How can you get to Sellye?

Sellye is located in Baranya County, about an hour’s drive from Pécs. It’s easily accessible by car, and there are several roads in the area with light traffic that are ideal for cycling.

It can also be reached by train from Pécs, and bike transport is available; this makes it possible to plan a combined trip.

When is the best time to go?

Any time from spring to fall is a good choice, but early summer and early fall are particularly pleasant. During these times, it’s not too hot, yet the landscape is already (or still) in full bloom. If you enjoy peace and quiet, weekdays are especially ideal.
