Lake Balaton Sparkles Even in Autumn

Both the northern and southern shores of the Hungarian Sea are full of year-round spectaculars.  You can select from numerous family-friendly educational paths, amusement and adventure parks, exciting lookout towers and panoramic hiking routes during the autumn break.  See the sunset from the wonderful panoramic spots of the Balaton and try the area’s best playgrounds. It is an excellent period for bicycle and hiking tours, since the temperature is pleasant and the colourful landscape offers an awe-inspiring sight.

Szántód and its environment hold numerous spots to discover. The Zamárdi Adventure Park, open on week-ends during the autumn, can be found nearby, as well as the Upside Down House in Siófok, in which you can feel like you’ve been flipped upside down. Be careful! Visit of both sights may make you feel dizzy. Beyond doubt, from the lookout towers of the southern shore the Kishegy in Balatonlelle offers one of the most beautiful panoramas. Visitors can enjoy charming hiking paths and eateries among the beautiful vineyards.  In the recently renovated forest park on top of the Kishegy you can find outdoor games, pleasant resting places, and one of the most beautiful panoramas of the Balaton shore on its 20 square-meter terrace. You can reach it by walking 200 meters from the parking area.

Bükfürdő is also worth adding to our bucket list! At the Bükfürdő Thermal & Spa experience bath, wonderful water adventures await you, whatever the weather. While the more adventurous break records on the slides, the little ones can splash around in the Shark Cave. Adults can relax in the spacious lounges and enjoy the beneficial effects of the medicinal waters of Bükfürdő – which are well worth getting to know a little better! The Visitor Center on Termál Square features a special screening that presents the history of medicinal water from the age of the dinosaurs to the present day. It is also worth taking a walk in the nearby Kneipp Park, where you can walk along a half-kilometer-long dry footpath and relax on unique sculptures: organic swings and squirrel wheels. If you want to cycle, electric bikes, e-scooters, and children’s bikes can be rented at the Tourinform office, so you can explore the area on two wheels along the well-developed bike paths!

Vroom-Vroom Sanctuaries for Young Vehicle Enthusiasts

If there is a young child, a curious teen or even an adult in the family who in their heart would still like to play with a toy train on the carpet of the living room, Hungary has several transport-themed attractions. Beside the wonderful sunset, in Balatonföldvár you can visit the Maritime History Visitor Centre, too, a building shaped like a ship run ashore, with models, simulators and a viewing deck inside, where you can even pose like a captain.

There is a spectacle on the other part of the country, in Szolnok as well: the RepTár Aviation Museum rather seems like an amusement park with wings. It features an obstacle course, a zipline, a dark maze, and of course numerous fighter jets which will make even Top Gun fans happy.

It is worth adding Monostori Fortress in Komárom to your autumn bucket list. In the 70-hectare area you can see many military historical spots. Wander the 3 kilometres underground tunnels, learn the history of the fortress system and look the Cold War weaponry.  If you are more interested in the world of mining, travel to Tapolca, where the Mining Museum offers a real underground adventure: jump onto the mining train and explore the world of tunnels in a helmet.

Cycling Adventures for the Active Family

If you would like to get on the bike with your family, there are many regions with well-designed routes. One great option is Hévíz and its surroundings: while cycling through the colourful autumn hills of Zala, you will think you are in a storybook. Start towards the Zalavár Ridge, which is not too long, but has just enough climbs for kids to say at the end: “We have done it!”  Taste the delicious cheeses in the Korosa Cheese Workshop in Nemesbük, and look the happy herd in the Tarkarét Buffalo Farm in Zalaköveskút.

A Hidden Gem in Hévíz

Homing to Europe’s largest thermal lake with healing properties, Hévíz is a fantastic autumn destination. Explore the area around the lake thoroughly, or even better to stay in Hévíz for several days. Well, there is a place offering excellent adventures during a multi-generational excursion. The five-star Le Primore Hotel & Spa opened in 2025 in a wonderful natural environment is ideal for longer relaxation or a refreshing stop between two active cycling days. Having a family wellness area, a special water world, and large, connectable apartments, this luxurious hotel is really family-friendly. Kids will be happy with the nearly 800-square-meter Adventure Kingdom, while the whole family can enjoy the outdoor and indoor pools of the Kids Spa and the Family Sauna. Just as the “we time”, you can enjoy some “me time” as well here – after playing together, ask for a relaxing massage or move away to the Lady Spa created for female guests. In the meantime, trained animators will watch over little ones in the playhouse, while older children can explore the laser maze or the VR room.
