- What experiences are we looking for in agritourism?
- Practical advice
- Hello Hungary tips
-How do we move from rural hospitality to a comprehensive experience? – we asked agrotourism expert Zsolt Matoltsy.
Our approach to travel has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years. More and more people are turning to nature-based, human-scale experiences where they can unwind not in a sterile environment, but among real stories and real people. Many also want to learn how food ends up on our tables, who stands behind local products, and what work goes into making good cheese, jam, or sourdough bread.
- Why do we long for rural experiences?
Most people today are completely disconnected from the world where their food comes from. A child often sees a tablet earlier than a cow. Agritourism restores this connection. Today, simply seeing how a cow is milked, how cheese is made, or smelling a freshly harvested herb has become an experience in itself.
Another important factor is the growing health-conscious mindset. More and more people are seeking ingredients from local, reliable sources.
Do we have to participate in the gardening activities, or is it optional?
It’s not mandatory, but in many places, this is precisely what makes the program special. Interactive experiences are particularly popular among visitors: cheese-making workshops, bread-baking sessions, grape harvests, or pick-your-own programs. For families, groups of friends, couples, or even school groups, these offer both relaxation and learning opportunities.
- Where and when can we find agritourism programs?
In almost every region of Hungary, we can find farms and workshops that are open to visitors. Just a few kilometres away from the big cities, a completely different world opens up before us: livestock farms, apiaries, herbal distilleries, vinegar-making workshops, or organic farms. Moreover, agritourism isn’t just popular during the summer; farms offer experiences all year round. Just think of pig slaughtering or harvest programs! In Zalaszántó, at the Zsankó family’s farm, for example, as part of a full-day program, we can participate in the processing ourselves and return home with quality-controlled, chemical-free meat products.
Practical information for visits
Most locations are open year-round, but programs related to animal husbandry and crop production are typically most enjoyable from April through November. It’s advisable to book accommodations in advance, especially during holidays and school breaks.
Program durations vary; you can choose from shorter visits to small farm shops to full-day farm experiences, depending on your family’s interests and the children’s ages.
