A series of experience walks and interactive exhibitions at the “Agroverzum” in Martonvásár

The Agroverzum of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences is a fascinating and interesting, yet highly entertaining, all-day programme. This science centre is a two-level, multi-room, interactive way to introduce visitors to agricultural and natural science topics that might seem boring at first, such as plant breeding, veterinary science, crop protection and soil science.

Both the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the municipality of Martonvásár had in mind the agricultural role of the town, which is closely linked to the intellectual and historical heritage of the Brunszvik family who used to live here. The aim is to create an institution specialising in innovation, which will be a unique research centre at the international level, creating scientific and economic value in its background work, and which can also become a cultural and tourist destination. They strive to make even serious work enjoyable and easy to understand for the visitor. The Agroverzum is also a great help in enriching the lessons of educational institutions in the region, with demonstrative guided tours and unusual biology lessons for children. "For us, the most important task is to familiarise children with nature and the agricultural world in an accessible, playful and exciting way," said the exhibition's creators. “The curiosity of children extends to everything, so the Agroverzum in Martonvásár is the right place and opportunity to introduce the work of researchers to the younger generation in a playful, experimental way." The Experience Centre itself is on the grounds of Brunszvik Castle Park, where you can follow the interactive exhibition of the “Agrarium” on two levels and through several rooms, but the exhibition goes beyond the walls: after visiting the indoor exhibitions, it is recommended to go out into the Castle Park. During the walk, which lasts several hours and is packed with games, you can read the information on many boards. A downloadable app has also been created to accompany the trail activities, making learning even more interactive for the young and old. There are fun tasks and puzzles to solve along the way. You can also take part in organised scientific programmes that showcase the work of researchers in an unusual way, not only as an observer but also as an active participant. There is also a regular "Experience Lab" and the "Significant Days" special science show.

How are gastronomy, agriculture and the environment linked?

There is also a lot of research going on within the walls of the institute, which is run by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and this will have a big impact on our future. The behind-the-scenes exhibition shows how researchers are fighting the damage caused by global climate change. We can also find out how we, as visitors, can help in this work, and realise how much individual responsibility parents and children (also) have in this area. The exhibition is an excellent illustration of what goes on in agriculture right up to the point where bread is on the table, how pest control is being developed and what environmental factors shape the quality of the harvest. In the “Science Behind Agriculture” exhibition, curators will discuss the diversity, role and benefits of agricultural science, including global warming, sustainable agriculture and biodiversity.

What programmes can be expected at “Agroverzum” this year?

One weekend each month, the museum staff prepare an exciting family programme. Scientific lectures are organised, with fun demonstrations for children and discussion programmes for adults. There are also craft activities to revive folk traditions. You can also ask to be accompanied by experts in Castle Park, who can competently explain the natural assets of the place. Adventure walks are available on the weekends of 24th-27th March and 7th-10th April by signing up for the “Spring Flower Tour”. From 12th to 15th May, the "Roaming the unknown corners of the park" adventure walk will start. The “Spring Treasure Hunt” will be held on 23rd-24th April and 21st-22nd May as part of the “Family Days”, and is scheduled to be repeated on 24th-25th September in autumn. The castle park is open to visitors all year round and is a wonderful place to visit in all seasons. Spring brings the blossoming of flowers, in summer the birds are singing, the colours of the autumn earth dazzle the visitor, and winter, if we are lucky, presents a snowy landscape that reveals the park's remaining birds.
