Near the water, the body and soul are also relieved. The waters, either a spring of abundance or a still-flowing stream, tear us away from the course of everyday life and flood us unobserved with serenity. It’s time to visit those places on the bucket list, where we can spent time in nature and moreover we can enjoy the fabulous view of the waterfalls. We have selected some of the most beautiful.

Ilona Valley Waterfall in the heart of the Mátra

This waterfall, falling among grim stone blocks is the highest natural waterfall in Hungary. Its water does not dry up completely even in summer drought, but if you want to enjoy it in all its splendour, it is worth visiting after a heavy rain or when the snow melts in spring. The 10-meter-high waterfall shows a different face each season. The ice-frozen waterfall is at least as fabulous a sight as it is in the autumn when it is dressed in gold. The Ilona Valley Waterfall in the heart of the Mátra is just one of the natural beauties of the landscape. The educational trail from Parádfürdő – almost 6 kilometres long – presents the geological values and the history of past ore mining. The hiking trail starts from the Károly Castle in Parádfürdő and then, following the Ilona stream, goes all the way to the waterfall. The trail of medium difficulty can be comfortably explored in 3 hours, while the varied face of the Kékes is revealed in front of you, and in the meantime you can taste the sulphurous mineral water that bursts from the depths of the mountains, the famous Paradi water.

    Romantic waterfall in Pilis

The springs, abundant in water, wildflower meadows and untouched nature, make this Pilis tour attractive. The route can be completed easily in just about three hours. Make sure you have the right clothes and food, and have a bottle with you: you can quench your thirst from three springs along the tour. The starting point of the tour is Dömörkapu, where after a few steps you will see one of the most beautiful, stepped waterfalls in the country, rushing among andesite rocks. The spectacular waterfall is fed by the Bükkös stream, in the romantic valley of which the tour continues. Clearings and forests alternate each other, while the stunning view of Dobogókő and the Preacher's Chair is also revealed. Go towards Lom Hill and then to Bölcső Hill, from there you can descend towards the Lajos spring and enjoy the panorama of Szentendre. The road descends lower and lower on the slopes of the gallery forest, then passing the Kőrösi Csoma Sándor lookout, you will soon find yourself at the starting point of the tour.

    Veil falls in Bükk

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Hungary is the Szalajka Valley. However, the breathtaking waterfall is just one of the attractions in the area. The small forest railway rumbles through eye-catching places, you find the peace by the sight of the trout lakes, and in the depths of the Stable-Stone Prehistoric Cave, your imagination can soar. Not far from the Veil Waterfall, there is one of the geological treasures of the valley, karst springs with one of the biggest water outputs in the Bükk Mountains. It is a beautiful natural phenomenon as the crystal clear water makes its way out of the rock. In its neighbourhood, in the Horotna Valley, the region’s unique open-air museum can be found, where forgotten crafts of the forest are revived. A trip in the valley is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and gain an insight into the past of Bükk.

A romantic hike and adjacent waterfalls in the Rám Gorge

The round trip to Dömös promises to be an exciting excursion. In the parking lot of the parish hall – which is both the starting point and the end of the tour – you can already feel the humid air flowing from the forest. Following the green sign, after a few kilometres of walking, you will find a narrow, rocky route provided by railings and ladders, which is very popular among adventurous forest hikers. The beautiful surroundings and the unique gorge will immediately enchant you. The rigidity of the 30-meter rock walls is tamed by the playfulness of the handrails, the emerald green moss cushions and the adjacent waterfalls in a fascinating experience. As you get out of the gorge, it’s worth taking a little rest and gathering strength to continue. The signs of the educational trail lead to the Lukács ditch and then to the Mill Valley. The winding paths widen, eventually joining the forest asphalt road, which takes you back to the starting point of the hike.

Roman Bath Waterfall in the Bakony

One of the most beautiful gorge valleys in Hungary is located deep in the Bakony, along the Gaja stream. The area near Bakonynána has a long history. It was supposed to have been a bathing place in Roman times, and later legendary outlaws took refuge in the valley. The Roman bath waterfall is affected by the weather, it shows its most beautiful face during the rainy seasons. You can reach this natural attraction on several routes, and one of the most beautiful trails starting from Jásd follows the line of the Blue Tour, which also touches the local ‘Szentkút’ (Holy Well). According to legends, the well was created in such a way that the hermit Péter Jásdi atoned and was thirsty in the forest. The Virgin Mary appeared in his dream and said: dig to find water. The place is a popular place for pilgrimage and nature lovers can quench their thirst from the water.
