Lónyay kastély (Tuzsér)

Temporarily closed
The only Baroque castle in the Great Hungarian Plain to the east of River Tisza (Tiszántúl) with frescoes is located in Tuzsér on the upper Tisza, in the northern part of the village, 300-350 metres from the protective embankment. It once housed a war hospital, and more recently war refugees. The most interesting part of the building is the fresco in the ceremonial hall, the work of Mihály Wurtzinger, a native of Eperjes (today: Prešov) who studied at the Academy in Vienna. There is also an exhibition on the life and work of the Lónyay family, with a special focus on Menyhért Lónyay, who was responsible for the regulation of the River Tisza, the draining of the marshes, the construction of the railway line and the promotion of apples in the region.
