Have a breakfast like a king – Café Nana
Breakfast places are in their heyday, so we can’t leave out one of Sopron’s most beautiful cafés, Café Nana, where you can enjoy the most important meal of the day in a bourgeois atmosphere – even in a gluten- or lactose-free version. The brunch menu is available throughout the day, so late risers won’t miss out on the goodies either. To do this, we can ensure our daily dose of caffeine with speciality coffees. Even if you don’t eat breakfast, it is worth stopping for a pastry during the day.
The heaven of sweet-toothed – Harrer Chocolate Workshop and Confectionery
A chocolate tasting at the Harrer Chocolate Workshop is a must on a visit to Sopron. The Austrian family business has been operated for four generations and has a very high standard. Karl Harrer and his wife opened their workshop in Sopron in 2009, next to their bakery. Their philosophy is to offer the best quality and choice – all in a pleasant, modern environment. So this program is not just for those with a sweet tooth, but also for architecture lovers. During the tasting, you can enjoy a demonstration of chocolate making while eating artisan sweets, and then taste raw, dark, milk and white chocolate and other flavours. You can also discover the chocolate fountain and chocolate drinks. Pre-registration is required for the tasting, which can be done using the contact details on the website.
A bourgeois lunch – Perkovátz House
If you want to dine in a real, peacetime restaurant, head to the almost 100-year-old Perkovátz House! The restaurant, which is reminiscent of an English pub, but at the same time has all the flavours of Sopron, was opened by Félix Perkovátz in 1924. At that time, it was a wine and beer hall, then it was taken over by the state, and finally, after a few years of legal wrangling, it was returned to the owner, Félix’s grandson Tamás Perkovátz, during the regime change. The Perkovátz House is known not only for its cuisine, but also for the meetings of several societies and associations in Sopron. In the three-storey restaurant, you can taste the typical flavours of the region, such as the deer ragout made with Sopron blue franc wine, in three rooms with different atmospheres. The restaurant is the perfect venue for a large family lunch.
Afternoon coffee at the main Square – Placz Café 1379
Tucked away among the sights of Sopron, this small speciality café is the perfect place to relax when you are tired of sightseeing. Placz Café 1379 opened under COVID in June 2020. The café was opened by a married couple who share a love of barista art, and it is with this enthusiasm that they make every cup of coffee for their guests. If you need a break, pick a book from their shelves and read a few pages before moving on.
Hungarian Wild West – Papa Joe’s Saloon & Steakhouse
Something light for dinner – we’d say, if we weren’t awaited by Sopron’s special steakhouse. Papa Joe’s Saloon & Steakhouse is reminiscent of the Wild West not only in its cuisine, but also in its design and atmosphere. The restaurant’s steaks are prepared in front of your eyes, so the smell and the sight of them will put you in the mood for a hearty meal. There are over 100 different whiskies to accompany the meat, as well as Hungarian red wines and brandies. The perfect venue for meetings with friends and team-building dinners.
