Sophisticated and delicious, a true luxury among sweets: the small, brightly coloured discs, filled with a delicate filling between two thin shells, immediately catch the eye with their vibrant colours and perfectly smooth, shiny surface. In our article, we have looked into the origins of this special French delicacy, and recommend a few places to taste it at home.

Its origins are unclear, but many believe that it first appeared in Italy in the 8th and 9th centuries. But the first documented records of it appeared in France, where it quickly became one of the stars of classic French confectionery. Macarons, as we know them today, became really popular in the early 1800’s, in Paris, when the first modern macarons were created by a confectionery called Ladurée.

In Hungary, its popularity has really peaked in the last few years, and thanks to the growing interest in it, it has been offered in more and more places in different flavours and colours. But what makes them so special?

Making macarons is a real art: the mixture of almond flour, icing sugar and egg whites has to be worked into a perfect mass, then shaped into small, uniform mounds before being placed in the oven. During baking, they develop their characteristic slightly crispy crust, while remaining soft and creamy inside.

Let’s see where you can taste these light as foam delicacies!

A heaven of sophisticated French desserts

The Macaron Bites, Debrecen’s first macaron bar, is a true French dessert heaven, where delicious macarons are created from a harmony of fresh fruit and premium Belgian chocolate. The founders’ hearts beat for flavour: they are dedicated to creating macarons that not only satisfy the most discerning guests, but also meet the highest gastronomic standards. Each piece is made with care and expertise, using natural and premium quality ingredients. Thanks to the recipes perfected over the years, you can taste specialities such as triple chocolate, velvety soft Belgian chocolate, pistachio raspberry honey sweet, or gourmet dark chocolate-chilli-sour cherry flavoured macarons. But it’s not just these delicious snacks that are on offer, there are also freshly roasted speciality coffees, which go well with French desserts.

A bite of French chic

Gard'Ann Confectionery in Kaposvár is a realm of sweet experiences, where elegance meets French dessert art, and where macarons, cake pops and other French dessert specialties dazzle the sweet tooth. You will also discover countless exciting cakes, mini cakes and festive creations. With creamy treats ranging from free versions to real delicacies, there is a dessert to suit everyone. You can taste, for example, tokaji aszú-flavoured giant macarons, tropical macaron cakes, and sometimes even macarons shaped like playful dogs and dinosaurs for children. In addition to the amazing cakes, the unparalleled interior design will enchant you, and the décor and the name of the place evoke the French atmosphere and the French tradition of pastry.

Irresistible sweet temptation, with panoramic view

Heavenly macarons, savoury cakes and delicious pies await us at the Czukor Borsó in Siklós, a true home of sweet delights. The place is hard to describe in a single word, as it is a community space, a child-friendly café and an artisan bakery, where guests can enjoy freshly baked sweets, homemade syrups and sweets. In addition to the classics, the menu also includes creations made with local ingredients, such as the red wine and chocolate macaron. The Czukor Borsó offers an unparalleled panoramic view of the Siklós Castle, but the special programmes and concerts are also worth a visit.

It is no coincidence that macarons are so fashionable all over the world, as they embody the elegant lightness that many people envy in the French. They represent a luxurious treat that makes it easy to dress up any special occasion or brighten up a drab weekday.
