Easter. One of the most colourful and flavoursome celebrations of spring, but in many ways not vegan-friendly. But how can we preserve the essence and joy of Easter traditions if we don’t eat meat and food of animal origin? What if we also want to make our Easter traditions vegan and animal-friendly? Here are the answers!

Is Easter a sin without meat?

It is hard to imagine a vegan holiday that is about breaking the fast, and after a long period of meat-free fasting, it is mainly about foods that are far from the criteria for veganism: ham, bread and eggs, for example. And the latter plays a key role not only in the Easter menu, but also in the children’s inevitable egg hunt. The good thing is that there are alternatives!

Easter egg hunt the vegan way

It is the kind of programme that makes children’s eyes sparkle and they still talk about the treasure-hunting adventure weeks later. The good news is that – if you insist on a chocolate egg surprise – you can now buy vegan chocolate eggs in many places. Another good solution is not to hide specific chocolate eggs, but small coupons that children can later redeem for a vegan cake or sweet.

If you don’t want to bake at home, the interactive map of Hello Hungary has a number of bakeries with vegan treats. Examples include the Desszertem confectionery and café in Miskolc, or the Krém Confectionery and Café, which has two units in Székesfehérvár.

Although the Easter egg hunt is officially a children’s activity, why not share the joy of the hunt with friends or adult family members? It can give you laughter, quality time together, an experience and an unforgettable memory, so don’t miss it!

Loaf baking challenges

One of the cardinal points of Easter is the loaf. While there are plenty of vegan recipes on the internet, the typical vegan loaf is the kind of delicacy that is a challenge even for the most experienced “bakers” (= home bread makers). And while it is definitely worth experiencing the ancient experience of kneading, rising and spinning, if you want to be on the safe side when it comes to vegan bread, the good news is that many bakeries are now making spun wonders without any ingredients of animal origin, mostly from homemade sourdough.

Several bakeries around Budapest produce vegan breads and pastries, such as the Keszi Kovászda in Budakeszi, the Liszt Kézműves Pékség in Érd, or the Pátyi Kovászda in Páty. Besides these, there are vegan bakeries in many parts of the country, and the map can be a great help in your research.

A live animal as a gift? We have a better tip!

At Easter, many people surprise their children with a live bunny or chick. Although the fluffy little ones are adorable, the reality is that they rarely remain permanent members of the family, and most of them end up in a place unworthy of a living creature after the holidays. But the fact is that the petting, presence and closeness of little animals is an experience that should not be denied to the youngest generation. You don’t have to, as there are plenty of animal farms and petting zoos around the country where children can enjoy complex, even all-day animal adventures with educational shows, educational presentations and, of course, lots of four- and two-legged animals.

In the Salföldi Major in the Tapolca district, for example, there is not only a petting zoo, but also horse-drawn carriage rides and horseback riding.

Another exciting – and fun – destination is the Seholsziget Nature Park, where you can meet one of the funniest animals, the alpaca, while the petting zoo has cats, dogs, goats and parrots, and a range of interactive activities.

We wish a pleasant – vegan! – Easter to everyone!
