Autumn Crane-watching at Lake Fehér in Szeged

In late autumn, there’s a very special reason to head for Fehér Lake in Szeged. The area is an important resting and gathering place for cranes: during the day, they feed in the surrounding fields and grasslands, and at dusk they return to the fishing ponds in large flocks, calling loudly as they settle in for the night. These few minutes are what make it worth waiting for the sunset. The guided crane-watching tours are timed to coincide with this daily rhythm. Participants wait for the birds from a suitable vantage point by the lake, whilst the guides talk about the migration and the wildlife of Lake Fehér. The area is one of the longest-studied bird migration sites in Hungary, so the spectacle is accompanied by a good dose of nature education.
