Eger’s city centre is home to one of the most important monuments in Hungarian history, the legendary border castle where in 1552 the men (and women) of István Dobó defeated the Turkish army, which was outnumbered by some 30 to one. You can learn more about the siege and the history of the castle not only from Géza Gárdonyi’s famous novel, but also from the interactive exhibition in the castle, and you can also visit the armoury and the barracks, and climb up to the Zárkándy Bastion – worth it for the view alone!
