In the last years of his life, Gyula Benczúr lived and worked in Dolány, a village of barely 150 houses in the hills of Nógrád, near Szécsény. Works such as The Abduction of Europe and Christ on the Mount of Olives were created in these idyllic surroundings. Upon the advice of his friend Kálmán Mikszáth, the artist bought the old castle on the hill above the village and turned it into a rare and beautiful home, with Renaissance and Rococo furniture, valuable art treasures and oriental carpets. Both the castle and the studio, located a few steps away, are open to the public, and the exhibition spaces include a number of original Benczúr paintings, relics, original draperies from his own textile collection, as well as reproductions, photographs and short films.
