Despite the winter time, it is worth going out into nature, even in the early evening darkness! If we manage to let go of the idea of nestling once in a while, we can have great experiences: all we need is a headlamp and a dose of determination! Our destination is Misina!
Despite the winter time, it is worth going out into nature, even in the early evening darkness! If we manage to let go of the idea of nestling once in a while, we can have great experiences: all we need is a headlamp and a dose of determination! Our destination is Misina!

One of the positive benefits of the winter time is that you can go on a hike in the forest with a headlamp relatively early without marching into the night. For summer adventurers, instead of nestling in at home, we strongly recommend to dress in layers, charge your headlamp and head for the forest! If you go hiking as a group, you can have great conversations by the light of the lamp, while if you go hiking alone or as a couple, you have a chance to hear the sounds of the forest! One way or another: it is definitely not worth stopping hiking in winter just because the sunbeams do not line our way! It is especially worth choosing a route where you can look down on the lights of the town from the dark forest. Our winter tour guide follows!

A mysterious gem of the Mecsek: the Misina

One of the most magical peaks of the Mecsek is Misina, where nature and a panoramic view meet! This mountainous terrain is a real paradise for hikers: shady forest paths, wild cliffs and a 611-metre-high peak await you, from which you can enjoy an unparalleled view of the town of Pécs and the surrounding hills. This point has always been a mysterious place around the town: according to a local legend, the ruins of an old, forgotten castle are hidden at the top of the mountain. One summer evening, a brave young man who had long heard the tales decided to discover the mysteries of Misina. He set off at sunset, when the top of the mountain offered a magical view of the town. He heard strange noises along the path, like something moving in the trees. As he got closer to the ruins of the castle, suddenly an old statue carved from stone stood in front of him. The statue depicted a warrior who seemed to be watching the comers.

The young man's heart was quickly seized with fear, but his curiosity was stronger. He touched the statue's arm, and then the sunlight just fell on the statue, suddenly bathing it in a flood of light. The warrior's eyes seemed to come to life, and the boy heard his voice: "Find the treasure that is hidden in the past!"

A 12-kilometre round trip with a magnificent view

Whether you believe the fairy tale or not, Misina is truly a mysterious place! Start your headlamp tour from the TV Tower, where you can refuel with great coffee and pastries at the Misina TetőPont Family and Movement Space at the beginning of the tour. There is a café on the ground floor: the Misina Café is an excellent shelter even in cold weather, where you can relax with a hot drink. When you are ready, head north on the yellow triangle tourist sign and continue until you reach the yellow circle sign. From here, following the yellow cross, you will soon reach the Rábay tree, which is one of the best-known natural symbols of the town. This huge, more than 200-year-old oak tree bears the name of the Rábay family, who have preserved the natural values of the area for centuries. The tree's impressive size and beautiful foliage attract many visitors and are a popular spot for nature walks. It can be an excellent point of your tour if you turn off all the lights and just enjoy the light of the stars!

Moving on, you will soon reach the sign for Pál Rockenbauer South Transdanubian Blue Tour, turn west here! Continue until the green lane sign, then turn south and continue on this road! In a few kilometres you will reach the Monument of the Conquest. A special feature of this building is that it is made of seven stones from the Mecsek, which symbolize the different landscapes and richness of the Hungarian land.

From there, it is only a few steps up along the red triangle sign, and you will reach the covered kis-Tubes lookout, where it is worth taking a rest. The building undoubtedly offers one of the most beautiful panoramas of Pécs, from which a stunning view of the town and the surrounding Mecsek Mountains opens up before us. The lookout is extremely popular among hikers and nature lovers, and is an ideal place for a pleasant picnic in the warmer months. If you have had enough of the majestic sight, move on, because the line of viewpoints is not over yet! The Tubes also offers a stunning panoramic view of the town (but this is not an indoor lookout), and once you are back at your starting point, you can even go up to the TV Tower for a look. If you get hungry, you can even have dinner at the restaurant at the top of the tower.
