“Garden Heritage in Tourism, Tourism in the Gardens” is the title of this year’s spring conference of the Hungarian Garden Heritage Foundation. The international conference, which will take place on 17-18 April at the Károlyi Palace and Garden in Budapest, with the participation of national and international experts, aims to draw attention to this new attraction for tourism, which is booming worldwide.

For ‘garden professionals’, including landscape architects, garden historians, horticulture engineers, gardeners and botanists, the interest in and love of landscapes, gardens and plants, the desire to preserve, protect and improve them, is self-evident. Many people feel the same fascination at the sight of a harmonious landscape, a beautiful flower garden, a huge tree providing shade. Interest in garden tourism surged during the pandemic, and its growth has remained uninterrupted since then. Outdoor, nature-centric places and garden heritage sites carrying complex cultural legacies have become increasingly popular in recent times. They represent a tourism attraction, making garden tourism a distinct and progressively developing category in today's tourism offerings. To ensure that tourism's presence and impact on both the garden and visitors are positive experiences, professional expertise is required. Challenges and tasks affect multiple directions and stakeholders. What do we expect, what do we gain, what do we leave behind when we become tourists or garden visitors, and what are our responsibilities as garden owners, managers, or caretakers? These questions will be addressed at the Hungarian Garden Heritage Foundation's conference on April 17-18, where attendees will gain insight into the garden tourism practices of Gödöllő Royal Palace, Vácrátót National Botanic Garden, and Károlyi Castle in Fehérvárcsurgó, among others. In addition to presentations, collaborative workshops, collective thinking, and forums for exchanging ideas and experiences will be prominent. Similar to previous years, the general public will also have access to open children's and adult art programs and garden education activities. On April 18th, starting from 6 PM, a talk show titled 'Guides of Eden' will be organized with the participation of Hungary's most popular garden influencers. Landscape architect Attila Vincze will be in conversation with Marcsi Borbás (My Garden), Márk McMenemy (Garden TV), and Miklós Szomoru (The Garden of a Gardener in Pilisszentkereszt).
